Looking to fish on Friday the 15th. Never fished the lake this early in the year. Are the fish up shallow? Would you still use jig and minnow or bottom bouncers? Thanks

We're heading out in the morning. Last word was thick Ice still near our at brownlows. We tagged two walleye last time and has a couple trout on camera too. Wouldn't mind some feedback on the ice road. I'm thinking it'll be...icy. we were motor deep on the augers last go. Three weeks ago. Looking forward to done isolation time.

by GDolan on Jan. 29, 2020
The ice was 12-14%u201D thick out from Brownlows Landing as of January 26th. After the cold snap it thickened up a bit more. How's the fishing on the west side of the lake?

by JDK on Jan. 29, 2020
Does anybody know how thick the ice is now?

by BAR on Jan. 27, 2020
Fished for about three hours in the AM, out from Sunnyside. Only seen one Pike

by YIGAF on Jan. 25, 2020
Fished three spots on different days this past week that have always been productive. Sunrise till noon and it’s even a new moon. Not one whitefish! It’s a disaster. Fourty years of good recreation and family enjoyment down the tubes! I would prefer if the walleye numbers were drastically reduced and the other species given a fighting chance. However, it may be too late to fix this failure.

by Weeman on Jan. 11, 2020
Well when you have the limit at 20 for multiple years thab 5 now 3 it's bound to happen

by DC168 on Jan. 10, 2020
Gull lake whites were brought from Pigeon about 40 some years ago. It became a popular sport fish for many years. It is unfortunate that it is disappearing.

by Catch-em on Jan. 9, 2020
12 inches sunnyside

by Maraxus on Jan. 9, 2020
ScottW, The original species in Gull are pike, perch and burbot. The whitefish and Walter's were introduced. Burbot is actually quite delicious and refered to as "poor mans Lobster". Some people just think they are garbage because they don't know how to fillet them. Burbot is a native species. I don't see them often, and never have.

by YIGAF on Jan. 7, 2020
Quite the comment ScottW. Reminds me of the couple from Falun who during the March spawn years ago were trying to give me some whitefish. The wife boasted, “I’m kicking my husbands butt.....he’s only caught 24 whites and I’ve caught 29!” Yes, there is lots of blame to go around. And yes other than the walleye, Gull lake is a disaster.

by DC168 on Jan. 3, 2020
The walleye program destroyed other species. Even the pikes lost the battle with walleyes. Whites and perches are disappearing. Just like Pigeon and Lac St Anne, nothing much left but only walleyes. It is extremely unbalanced. The food chain is broken. Eventually, the walleyes have nothing to eat but themselves.

by Weeman on Jan. 3, 2020
It's not the lake it's poor management this province couldn't manage a goldfish right, leave the limit at 10 for all them years now 3 and it's to late
by wallynuts on Jan. 2, 2020

by SvenB on Dec. 29, 2019
Has anyone been catching at brownlows? i have a shack at 16’ and no action

by lhefford on Dec. 28, 2019
Sorry to break it to you ScottW, but burbot are not an invasive species, nor do they destroy lakes. Check your facts.

by ScottW on Dec. 28, 2019
The refs should increase the amount of burbot to be taken home. It is an infasive fish that destroys lakes. So ignore the refs and take all you want home. They are the easiest fish to catch for a reason. And they taste ok

Thanks Doyle. Is the Sandy Point launch public?

by doylejhansen on Oct. 8, 2019
was out again on Sunday the 6th of October, all jig and minnow, the two of us caught 76 walleye, 2 "c", 1 "b" all the rest were "A" ... we have b tags to fill ... ran out of minnows at 3 PM ... called it a day ... aspen beach launch has been in bad shape all year, shallow, best to launch at Sandy Point since it is the closet to all fishing spots and the best launch on the lake ... why burn up gas ... thanks doyle
by Fritzy1475 on Oct. 7, 2019
Is the Aspen beach boat launch still open?

by doylejhansen on Oct. 5, 2019
Brewers is at the south end of the lake, and the Sandy Point Resort is the west side of the lake about three miles from brewers. I have done both bottom bounced but I have caught more with jig and minnow in 6 to 15 feet of water, we are going out tomorrow Sunday I will post the results

by Just jig it on Oct. 5, 2019
Thanks Doyle! How close is sandy point to Brewers? You just dragging bottom bouncers for the Wallies or jigging?

by doylejhansen on Oct. 5, 2019
everything is a okay at the lake, this late in the season launch at sandy point, will handle any boat size and since it has a central location easy, access to your fishing spots... walleye fishing is on fire right now .. be sure to post the results

by Just jig it on Oct. 5, 2019
What's the water level like now! Maybe going to head up for the first turkey weekend of the season!

by Conservation Fishing for Life&Children on Sep. 14, 2019
Talking about jigs, I bought a jig called The Maurauder from a guy on gull. He makes them, and man do the work. Pike, walleye love them. I think he sells them on kijji. Feather jigs.

by Fishing365 on Sep. 12, 2019
It is getting close to that time of year when lake turnover happens. This can really make fishing challenging.
by Vince on Sep. 10, 2019
Fished in Gull Lake Sept 5. Beautiful and calm lake. Didn’t catch any near Sandy point. Usually I caught at least a few. Only 2 fishing boat on the lake. The other boat didn’t catch any either after a few hours. A bit disappointed. Not too many fish on the fish finder. Went to the east side of the lake. Saw a lot of fish on the fish finder but they are not biting. Will be back again.

by doylejhansen on Sep. 7, 2019
the actual color for the pigeon lake jig special is described as "parrot" by the manufacture Whizkers ... not p-e-a-c-o-ck

by doylejhansen on Sep. 6, 2019
--almost any jig will work in Gull, but this one jig out fishes others in the boat maybe 2 to 1__-- it all started many years ago when I bought these jigs from the "Buck lake Hardware", after a tip from "Buck Lake Bob"__-- was used in Buck first, than to Pigeon and now Gull__-- these jigs are hard to find, and they are made by "Whizkas"__-- we use the 1/4 and 3/8 depending on the situation__-- I believe the color is called "P-E-A-C-O-C-K", bright blue w/ chartreuse on the nose of the jig and the belly__-- we also have success on the Whistlers and Thumper jigs, different colors, bronze in the Thumper seems best, made by Northlands, again in 1/4 and 3/8__-- lots already know, but just use a minnow, put on upside down on the jig, no need for any type of a rubberized jig body__-- I would post pictures, but the "ifish" site does not have that feature yet__-- had to spell the color differently since the site said it was offensive ... __-- need to know more, just ask __thanks doyle

by doylejhansen on Aug. 25, 2019
was out again on Saturday the 24th, fish count 135, finally went to a different spot, Stoner's Beach, rode out one hec of a hail/rain storm, again, the pigeon lake go to jig worked for everyone, fished in 12 to 15 feet of water, biggest was 60 cm weighing in at 3.9 pounds, fishing still is hot get out there and have some fun

Is there an area on shore or some sort of a marina /pier dock that I can take my 2.5 yr old fishing?

by Minnowdunker on Aug. 18, 2019
Don't hesitate to call the tips line when you see people poaching, fish and wildlife really appreciate it!! Thx for confronting them man, at the very least they know the real sportsman are watching and see what's going on!!

by doylejhansen on Aug. 18, 2019
was out again on Saturday the 17th of August, fish count at 77, for the two of us, swore we were going to try other areas of the lake, but tough to move from a productive spot, fished from 3 to 8 .. with most the fish after 5, jig of the day, "pigeon lake special"

by doylejhansen on Aug. 11, 2019
was out again on Saturday the 10th of August, had a hard time getting 60 fish, count stopped at 59, fished sandy point, and out in front of the sailing club ... sadly ... observed a boat putting walleye in a cooler without tagging, approached them at the ramp and the couple swear they were tagged ... next time it happens I am calling the toll free number ...

by doylejhansen on Aug. 7, 2019
was out on Sunday the 4th of August, lost count after 100 walleye, between 2 guys, sandy point area, jig and minnow, ran out of minnows after 3 1/2 tubs, 85% were "b" size, handful of "c" and 1/2 dozen up to 60 cm ... off the lake at 4:00 PM .. great day is an understatement

by Minnowdunker on Jul. 30, 2019

by Cal_Fisher on Jul. 11, 2019
Am looking to take the boat to Gull, wondering if the water level raised up a bit.

by Fishing365 on Jun. 27, 2019
It was still closed last Monday. I put a call into Alberta Parks and they said they are looking at a solution. They have to do shoreline studies before doing any work so I don't anticipate it getting fixed anytime soon. Can see that other launch becoming a zoo as camping season begins.

by fishstew on Jun. 27, 2019
Does anyone know if the beach side launch at aspen is still closed and if they are going to fix it or....?

by Pozzo on Jun. 25, 2019
I would like to take my son out on a little camping / pike fishing lake. Is this a worthwhile lake ? Are there better options near by ?

by White master on Jun. 3, 2019
So you are all aware the pike limit is 0 not 3 over 63 like it says on here. Be sure to double check the regs.

by Minnowdunker on Jun. 2, 2019
What we call 3 mile point is the point immediately NE of Sandy Point RV Resort. We've always had good luck fishing the drop off there.

by Goodlife1 on Jun. 2, 2019
Where is 3 mile point?

by Minnowdunker on May. 31, 2019
At Aspen the launch on the beach side is closed and the one on the campground side is still open but in bad shape! Not sure why these launches haven,t been repaired before they get so bad they have to be closed?? Fishing was decent off 3 mile point managed to fill a couple of tags.

by Gillisj on May. 27, 2019
How's the north end launches? I know going thru sandy point is alittle rough.. 2 feet maybe.. looking for best option to launch. Thanks

by Fishing365 on May. 21, 2019
Aspen is in, was hoping they would dig that launch out some more as it is super shallow, aside from the deeper hole right in the middle of the launch, it's maybe two feet around there at best.

by shanty on May. 16, 2019

by Fishing365 on Mar. 25, 2019
Was at Sandy Point today, access was ok but is breaking down. Then went to brownlows and lots of flooded water about six inches deep on top at the entrance. Once your past it is ok but it is starting to get rutted up. Not sure about the north end.

This province couldn't manage a goldfish, they've ruined this lake, years ago it used to be 10 fish per person than it went to 5 now 3 can't they tell that hey something just ain't working here!? Same with the pike 63cm is absolutely Brain dead management, that's the breeding pike we're stripping our lakes of, sask let's you keep anything but one trophy fish cause they want the old stock to keep reproducing, but here let's take out all the breeders, it's poor management, and they're wrecking it for all of us

by ScottW on Mar. 14, 2019
Up the number of burbot to take home, problem solved.

by DC168 on Mar. 14, 2019
F&W had done some good thing here. About 40 years ago, they brought white fish from Pigeon to Gull. It became a good sport fishing spot for many years. However, the walleye program changed the balance of the ecology here. IMO.

by BoBo on Mar. 12, 2019
Gull Lakes fish numbers have been declining for many years now and most people donclining for many years now and most people don’t even go there any more because the lakes fish numbers are so low due to over fishing but the main reason is because of fish and wildlife. They have done an absolute terrible job of monitoring the fish numbers and have ignored it to the point that there is very little fish left. Just another example of a lake dying because of fish and wildlifes lack of caring and some fishermen taking way more then they need t

by DC168 on Mar. 6, 2019
More walleyes and less whites and perch here. It seems less people coming to Gull this winter. Obviously it is no longer attractive to some fisherman. The walleye program (tags) is failing, similar to Wabamun, Pigeon and Sylvan. IMO.

by Goodlife1 on Feb. 2, 2019
ZERO burbot from yesterday to MARCH 31
by Mikemilly on Feb. 1, 2019
Out at sandy point, started early, caught a big burbot while still setting up, thought it was a 1 and done day, 5 hours later another good sized burbot up and a small/med pike 30 min later, nothing else, long slow day but better than a good day at work! Tight lines and determination! Water was clear and shallow about 8’ and roughly a metal rappleas scoopers depth of ice... used minnows and standard jig head setup, nothing special, all caught, photo’d and released, will return!

Burbot are a very good eating fish For people that want to take fish home. Southern Alberta lakes are very overfished. Keep the destroyers of a lake and throw back the good ones
by ScottW on Feb. 1, 2019
Burbot eat everything! No wonder they are easy to catch. Watched one on Camera gorge it self on fallen baits.
by ScottW on Feb. 1, 2019

by ScottW on Feb. 1, 2019
I believe the burbot are the problem.

by Ziebiez on Jan. 29, 2019
Fished Sunnyside on Sunday. Fishing was good late morning walleye & jack. Afternoon slow with 1 burbot. Late afternoon was busy with lure staring walleye. Lots in hole on camera but wouldn't take anything. Massive Burbot came through but never took the bait!

by Dslug on Jan. 29, 2019
There's something going on in this lake was out last 2 weekends and never seen thing in depths from 4ft to 25ft on 4 different areas...very disappointing. If anyone catches any Carp please report it to Fish&wildlife. Also beware between Wilson's beach and pelican point there is a strip of flood water on the ice

by Zoltrix on Jan. 26, 2019
Good to hear they are still in there haha. Fishing's been pretty slow for me this year. A friend said he caught a few carp in the lake from a boat this past summer, I've been wondering if they are effecting the game fish yet... There's not a ton of info I've found, but Alberta states not to put them back. Kill them and throw them in a garbage can or eat them.

Naybe fish n game could very well do some enforcement on them 2 stroke 4 stroke speed demons. The lakes big enough that they can do there thing away from the shacks . I was at a lake about 30 years ago and a guy was ripping. Bye a ice tent non stop and the guy inside came out and leveled him off the sled . Was a priceless moment.

Ice Report: 17 in
The 17” of Ice was measured with a measuring tape. We were near the group of AIF shacks off of Brownlows. Water was clear, and 10-12’ deep.
Too many 2 and 4 strokes rippin’ around the ice, Fishing was garbage.
Also- these machines were tearing around and through the groups the Ice shacks and Tents.
A severe lack of care on the riders part.

by Fishing365 on Jan. 5, 2019
Lee, there are vehicles driving out now. However, the ice thickness does vary across the lake. South end, brownlows lots are driving on. Was at sandy point decided to walk out, flooded water still in places and only measures 9 to 11 inches in that 20 to 22 foot area. Not enough for me to drive yet but good if you have an ATV. Use caution and check as you go.

by Dslug on Jul. 26, 2018
Gull is already changing the walleye are taking over this last winter was worst for catching perch and whites... going to be just like pigeon lake soon

by Copsarehere on Jul. 12, 2018
Went out today caught 17 walleye 2 pike between two of us. Biggest walleye was 60cm 5lbs. Great day to fill our tags.

by Troy78 on Jul. 6, 2018
I also fished there on the long weekend with about the same success. Steady catch but not crazy. On the other hand I am happy about the walleye tags being handed out. I watched lac ste Anne go through the same process where there were few walleye the numbers increased after the 0 limit. Then the fish got big and heathy. Caught many walleye in the five pound range and some even larger. This unfortunately only lasted a few years then I started no notice we were catching very few pike and the ones we did were long and skinny. Sick looking. Within the next few years the walleye were everywhere. The perch were gone and the walleye seemed stunted in size. All the same and way to many of them. I feel like the lake should have been opened long before we got to that point. Hopefully with proper management on Gull the fishery will provide a lasting healthy population of all species of fish.

by CP82 on Jul. 6, 2018
Fished with kids here a few hours on the 3rd & 4th. Fishing was steady... not great not poor. Nothing like last year, roughly 30 fish between the 3 of us in 2 hours each day. 4 pike rest were walleye. Biggest walleye 56cm, majority of walleye were beautiful thick healthy fish in that 45-50cm range. I can't help but think they are handing out WAY too many tags. Everyone you talk to has tags, I could be missing something but why give out tags to keep them bigger breeding females in that 48cm plus range? My guess is it'll be a closed zero limit within the next 3-5 years and we'll go back to the days of early 2000's where you fished all day and we're lucky to catch 1-2 walleye.

by Grandpa2018 on Jul. 2, 2018
Fished with my Grandson on Canada Day Weekend. Caught pike and walleye on jigs and walleye divers. One 32" pike. All were catch and release. I have seen a number of negative reviews regarding making the lake catch and release however

by Shifty on Jun. 30, 2018
RE.Qestion by SHANE MOORE. the carp in the blindman are easy to catch on a copper wire worm and maggot . We use a slip bobber and set it so we are slowly drifting it 6" or so off . bottom . We used bread doe in Enland to catch carp however bait restrictions here prevent that . Once you find a area they are in you can expect to catch loads of them . Lots of fun .look for slightly deeper pools and slower water.

by Shane Moore on Jun. 17, 2018
what did you use to catch the carp?

by Shifty on May. 19, 2018
After hearing about carp near the pump station in blindman river I decided to try and catch some . Well today my daughter and I caught 16 carp on west side of Hwy 20 beside the bridge. Some were 14.5" long . I am glad the pumps are off and hope they never get turned back on . Better gull lake be low water than full of carp .

by Nemofish on May. 6, 2018
Thanks to the bucket bridage, every lake, pond, reservior will soon be a home to Prussian carp. I fished a different lake last year only stocked with trout and couldn't believe there was a carp on the end of the hook. There should not be carp here...... The bucket bridage have destroyed our fishing industry.......

by Shane Moore on Apr. 30, 2018
when they open up the pike again, is it going to be another cash grab draw thing again?.. and now they are saying there is a good chance goldfish have been introduced to gull... wtf!!!

by Shane Moore on Apr. 25, 2018
the walleye are back in good numbers, and the pike, and all other fish are disappearing.. could it be that the walleye are overpopulated now, and are decimating the other fish? but of course, we can keep 1 for the year if we go into the stupid cash grab draw.. sounds about right...

by Uncle Ben on Apr. 23, 2018
What you said make absolute sense Catch-em. Why can’t the Alberta FW see that?

by Catch-em on Apr. 22, 2018
The zero pike limit doesnt bother me to much if there is a problem with the growth or population of the them I don't want them disappearing what I dont understand is why Alberta FW take so long to fig this out this should have been seen years ago and changed keep limit from 3 to 1 years ago and the anglers who wish to keep 1 are able to and still have sustained the pike population I think some of the keep limits on some species are to high across Alberta and other keep limits of some species are zero that should be brought up to be able to keep 1

by Uncle Ben on Apr. 15, 2018
Didn’t catch any whites past 3 years, with the pike limit being ZERO per the 2018 fishing regulation, I’m going to write off Gull Lake for fishing. 😭

by MitoMan on Mar. 24, 2018
For the gentleman with the white Ford truck, thank you so much for bulling me out last Thursday. Those towing service guys were useless and charged me too much, but it was you who saved the day. Thanks again. As for Ice condition guys, there was 3 ft of solid ice as of Mar 22. But it was the foot of snow above ice that made driving on the lake a nightmare. So for you guys planning to go to Gull, stay with the crowd and do not take the risk of reaching the far spots cuz being stuck on the ice far from the crowd is Not fun

by BurbotSlayer on Mar. 13, 2018
Exactly Zoltrix! I welcome the fish cops, too many not following the regs. If we want to preserve the sport more folks need to respect the regs. Last year, on the final day of the season, the guys next to us were keeping everything. Fish and Wildlife showed up and seized a bag full, truly unfortunate.

by Zoltrix on Mar. 12, 2018
Personally I'd like to see fish and game more. Haven't for two seasons now. I know of a group here, and at pine that keeps everything they pull up. I would like for my kids to fish, and teach kids of their own one day.

by BurbotSlayer on Mar. 12, 2018

Why white fish is disappear in this lake. first is over fish and too many walleye is eating the small white fish. I consider the AB wild life is Not managing fresh water fishery very well.. a lot of lakes fishery is not balance. and restriction is very re enforced.

by black kid on Jan. 18, 2018
second week of January we were fishing Raymond shore . did not see a fish at all.

by Minnowdunker on Jan. 17, 2018
The draw system helps keep people honest. The slob poachers are a huge problem don't hesitate to call the tips line when you see people abusing the regs. The province needs to get onboard with a robust restocking program like our neighbors to the east and west of us. Given the amount of lakes and the amount of anglers it's a losing battle with the current program the province is using.

by Mikey69 on Jan. 16, 2018
Thinking of heading out tomorrow out by birch bay found the pike and eyes there .like to get into some perch or burbs been close on size for the pike but that's how it goes one of the eyes hit twenty inches fat boy full of perch likely. Has the wind drifted up the lake much?

by Jaylive on Jan. 16, 2018
I agree slot size would the way to go, fished few times this summer and it produced some beautiful walleye. Anything 26" is a real nice fish in my books. Had lots over that too. But haven't hooked into them in the winter. Anyone else catch one of these nicer fish during the winter? I don't fish usually for food. If I keep anything it's usually some Perch and burbot few times a winter. Don't need to know where just curious

by Allen4 on Jan. 16, 2018
Right on the money Spewy. we lost a lot of nice breeding walleye this summer because of the backward gov't policy. Its fun to catch the big ones but throw them back as they are the future for recovery

by Owner of parkland beach store on Jan. 16, 2018

by Minnowdunker on Jan. 15, 2018

by DC168 on Jan. 15, 2018
True. The fisherman and lake ratio in this province is extremely unbalanced as compared to our next door neighbour to the east. Lake Wabamun has been closed for over ten years. May be it is time to allow keeping so that Gull and Pigeon can take a rest and recover.
by Spewy on Jan. 15, 2018
Thats cause the main spots are way over fished

I was strictly fishing for whitefish, seen one whitefish unable to catch it. was a good day nonetheless. I think the cloud and the wind may have contributed to not seeing many whitefish.

Just jig it. On the east side of the lake there is a point...known locally as Pelican Point. Stay at least 100 yards west of that. Just 100-200 yards N of Pelican Point is a shallow rock pile.

by Just jig it on May. 25, 2017
Thanks Icefishinguy! I truly appreciate your help!

by Icefishnguy on May. 25, 2017
Just jig it, for me, the biggest risk is on the north end of Brownlows, near the new marina at Sandy Point. At that corner, going south and east - there is a long ridge that is rocky and shallow. I shaved a bit off the ol prop a few 100 yards off shore there. Go wide around there._Other than that, I haven't found any shallow spots, that aren't obvious (close to shore all around the lake tends to be shallow)_Hope that helps

by LRD V8R on May. 23, 2017

Blinejames we were fishing off Sandy Point in about 17-19 fow. Today we each filled a tag with 25" and a 23" walleye. Tasted excellent for supper.

by Blinejames on May. 19, 2017
Fishingmike. I'm out for the weekend. Where abouts were you fishing? Thanks for the help

by Fishingmike on May. 16, 2017
Great opening day. 2 large pike, 4 ling and about 8 walleye. Minnow and a jig for all.

Lake open today for the summer fishing season, free new boat launch at west lake road. Open today 9 30pm until 1 pm only, frozen bait in stock and hooks. Be safe on the lake and remember the water is freezing brr

by Conservation on May. 13, 2017
Hey Shifty, a heart felt THANK YOU from people around Gull that you do that! Have safe summer!

by Shifty on Apr. 12, 2017
I would like to thank all the fishermen that were on gull lake all winter for doing a great job of cleaning up after they were all done . Again this spring I went out on a quad with a trailer and picked up garbage left on the ice . Only two bags is all I found ,mostly coffee cups and minnow containers ect. Please remember to remove fire wood from the lake . There was so much left on ice I couldent attempt to remove it all. My concern is kids hitting floating logs ect while tubing in the summer . Otherwise I was pleased with the small amount of garbage however none would be awsome.

by Owner of parkland beach store on Apr. 1, 2017
Ice fishing on gull lake now closed. This season i have had many ice fishermen /women and children coming into the store, I wish to thank those who helped educate me more about ice fishing. Please note : around the lake it is very shallow and now with the warm weather and Rain this evening be aware it may not be safe going out onto the lake. See you when the open water season starts Mid May

by MitoMan on Mar. 31, 2017
Thanks "Find me fishing" for the tips. Landed some good perch today (my first perch ever). They liked the yellow ww more than the whites. Did not catch any white but my friend caught a 2.7 lb white just next to me, so I will take this for success. Becaureful with the access guys. An SUV was stuck at the Brownlows access this afternoon. Ice was good though. See you guys on the open water season :)

by Jaylive on Mar. 31, 2017
How are the accesses? Still good enough for a truck? Hopin to get out after work for the last time! Been a good season

by rogerwhitefish on Mar. 31, 2017
Please follow the rules everybody. Keep the regs with you. Need more catchandrelease than ever. Hope to god the people who caught 70 did not kill 70.! 3 whites per day. Killing 3 or 4 inch perch is detrimental to keeping a good lake population. As is any kind of poaching. Be sure u have licenses.

by Find Me Fishing on Mar. 30, 2017
For those whites, I've been having luck for the past few weeks catching them at a depth of about 8 feet. Try wire worms of various colours to see what they're going for at that given hour. Tipping the hook with a couple of maggots sometimes helps. Check the hot spots for this lake to find a general area to explore and drill holes until you find the fish. Good luck on the last day of the season!
by MitoMan on Mar. 30, 2017
Heading to Gull Lake early morning hoping to catch my first whitefish before the season is gone. Any advise is very appreciated (spot, bait, time). I hope the ice is still good for my little car.

@ScottW, why would you want to walk on instead of drive on? @AlbertaKid, how hot is it in the Red Deer region!?__I don't know about Gull lake, but around Edmonton, it hasn't been nearly warm enough to melt over 30 inches of ice.

by D-bar1 on Mar. 23, 2017

by Owner of parkland beach store on Mar. 19, 2017
Thank you to the ice fisherman who called me at the store last night to report, nothing doing off sunnyside marina ! Slow at sandy point and brownlows. Hopping he has a better fishing day today. Reports off RV heaven Marina ( north end ) were more positive with variety of fish species being caught. Any one else with good fishing please post. I do have gold / silver bells in stock and fresh and frozen bait

by deepfriese on Mar. 10, 2017
Thanks for the info rhino rain! I may try your advise tomorrow!

by RHINO_RAIN on Mar. 10, 2017
You have to find a sandy bottom. Bang the bottom with a gold, yellow or green bell is about the easiest. If you pulling up burbs the white fish are near. Remember also you may have to drill 30 holes depth to shallow to find them. Many anglers drill 1 hole fish all day with no luck and blame it on the fish not biting. Hope this helps.

by WILSON-123 on Mar. 10, 2017
Where are the hotspots for Whitefish?

by Timidhc on Mar. 10, 2017
Can hardly wait for the nice weather aswell @RHINO_RAIN Any tips for a new angler trying to catch her first whitefish?

by RHINO_RAIN on Mar. 10, 2017

by Owner of parkland beach store on Mar. 9, 2017

Hey everyone just wondering if the water is still pretty murky and hard to see at brownlows
by mountainman11 on Feb. 21, 2017
Hey humam you're welcome. Yes same spot as perch. I use a little 5 of diamonds with maggots or meal worms. Good for perch and whites. Use a smelt on a tip up first pike. Middle of water column . Wire worms for perch and whites too. Bare or with maggots

by Carrot321 on Feb. 21, 2017
I was out last week between birch bay and sunnyside campground and caught 3 pike all keepers, on a soft body yellow jig, maybe try over there I threw them back so they are still out there.

by Fishermansfriend12 on Feb. 21, 2017
Someone please help me find some pike! My second day on gull this winter, tried birch bay and currently at sandy point in about 10 FOW and have only seen the odd pike, landed none.

by Humam on Feb. 20, 2017
BTW big thanks to mountain man for the response; it really helped me out . I appreciate it. How did you catch that white and pike ? Same spot as the perch?

by Humam on Feb. 20, 2017
Hi guys. Out near parkland beach today 1 white all day. Where exactly are you guys catching whites and how. Thanks

by Albertafisherman on Feb. 20, 2017
A couple nice size pike caught at brownlows today including a nice 35" 12.5lb pike. Also some good pike action out by meridian canal today aswell. I got word today from a local home owner that as of April 1st the canal will be closed to the public. You can't go off the walking paths, anyone know if this is true?

by mountainman11 on Feb. 19, 2017
Sorry for the late response hum 6 inches off the bottom and maggots are good on a five of diamonds. Small meal worms are good too. Go to brownlows go straight out 1000 yard's than hard left go towards shore. And stay back 600 yard's from muskrat hills. Find 6 feet of water. Good luck. See this is what this app is about.

Bigworm709 I've caught all my pike this year using large sardines from Cabela's but you can also get them from superstore. I used large smelts but I find the bigger pike aren't too interested in it. As soon as I made the switch my average pike I pull out when I go is 7-8lbs and my biggest is 12.4lbs this year

ScottW. Check out adventureicefishing.com Rates and pics for both overnight and day huts. Drive straight on and park door to door. Really all you need to pack is a sleeping bag, food and drink. They even supply a fish cam. As for bait, minnows with a straight hook. Hardware is turning them away. Good luck, I can't encourage anyone enough to give it a go.

Spent the weekend with Adventure Ice Fishing. Fantastic time. All in all, 13 pike with 5 keepers, 2 burbs, 4 walleye tossed back, lost count of the perch but zero keepers, if it's not 12" or more we toss them back. A dozen or so whites on the camera, just couldn't land them. Hats off to Jarred and Trina. Great on ice experience.

by ScottW on Jan. 28, 2017
Thinking about heading out there mid February. I notice guys talking about wireworms(online). Is the wireworm like the San Juan worm for flyfishing the hook with the wire wrapped around it. Or is it referring to bait.? Not looking for the big ones just some action from whitefish or perch. Thinking about Aspen beach area any tips or suggestions for bait or jigs/lures?

The biggest problem is with bo snow on the ice people have do less moving around and you make shadows under the ice. If you can sit still the fish will come but if you have tons of people it makes it hard for others. So remember folks less movement more fish.

by cgenno on Oct. 27, 2016
I still caught plenty of pike and burbot 2 weeks ago, had to take a more subtle approach with lures/bait to catch but I still caught 18 pike 5 burbot in 4 hours, they are still there just won't be very aggressively feeding on crankbaits/spoons

by Albertafisherman on Oct. 20, 2016
Been fishing the canal all summer and I always go home with my limit of both pike and burbot including a 9lb and 13lb pike I caught 2 weeks ago. Since that tho the fishing has been dead, usually there's tons of minnows and pike jumping but last couple weeks there's been hardly no action. Fished 3 days ago for about 6 hours and only caught 1 fish

by Mikey69 on Oct. 19, 2016
.Well I was out at the canal last week cool windy weather. fishing was slow. I came in from the south side of the canal it has not been developed there yet although the street is paved. With fifty years of fishing under my belt I have always respected the outdoors public land or private land I always carry a bag with me and try to keep the shoreline cleaner than when I arrived there was a few things that I did pick up and take home but I have found that this summer every where I have gone it is the same it is a shame people cannot pick up after them selves well back to fishing I did catch a six pound jack. tight lines to all and remember to have fun.

Has anyone been to Meridian beach canal recently? Is it still open water or starting to freeze? Any info appreciated.

by Santos on Sep. 24, 2016
Enough BS how is the fishing

by FlyHand on Sep. 23, 2016
09Cabelas I am glad to see a response where some one is looking at facts and regulations. You are correct, the lots do not go down to the waters edge. However the development company that started Meridian Beach owns the canal banks and was the developer of the entire Meridian Beach association. They are the private land owners of the canal banks. The public access in Meridian Beach of which there is access, is at the beaches that are maintained for both public and home owners recreational use at the home owners associations expense. The canal is a man made structure and the public water access rights for everyone is accessed by the lake. To get to the water other than by boat requires you to leave the public walking path and walk across private property. I ran into issues where we lost access to fishing at the Pembina river. The new land owner would not allow the public to access the water from his hay field to the waters edge. This was his right and the crappy part was we lost the ability to get to the waters edge. Honestly, it was not an issue a few years ago. Over the last 2 summers it has gotten out of control. There are honest people respectful of private property who were not a problem, unfortunately between the property damage, amount of dead and mishandled fish, poaching (the FW people are busy here) and overall attitude of people when asked to respect property, the community has come to the end of its wits. Thank you for your input.

by 09cabelas on Sep. 23, 2016
I do not fish the canal or intend to but I wanted to jump in. I looked at the site plan for meridian canal and actually property lines are not to the water line. In Alberta under common law there is what is referred to as riparian zone, so the way I look at it people can actually fish from the shore as that is still considered public land. Look at the site plan and there is also a website called healthy shorelines.com. Maybe I have interpreted this wrong.

by piclicker on Sep. 22, 2016
Flyhand you posted on Sept 17 that if you are fishing the canal you will be asked to leave- maybe i rear this the wrong way- i thought you were talking about evryone but now i am guessing you are talking about people fishing off shore and on your docks. I do apologize for not reading this right and i am 100 percent behind you with respect to people coming onto your property and you asking them to leave- Sorry guy

by FlyHand on Sep. 22, 2016
Piclicker; No where did I say that people cannot fish in the canal on their boats, this is the water access rights that all citizens of Alberta enjoy. So for you to take it that way, and say "too bad for me" I do not know where you interpreted that, I told Doyle to enjoy the "hot spot" in the canal, with his boat. This could be an example of the knee jerk reaction most people have over a topic like this. I am referring to the people on the canal banks and the canal banks alone. These are the people causing the issues and they are on private property, again nothing about the water itself in the canal accessed by a boat. This is exemplifying what is being experienced out here by everyone at Meridian Beach. This has become a property issue, not an access to water issue with people in their boats. I encourage you to keep coming in your boat, I would not say anything as there is no issue with that. I encourage you to re-read the posts and perhaps educate me on where i indicated that "to bad for you... you cannot fish in your boat in the Meridian Beach Canal water". Constructive feedback is always welcome in an educated dialogue. As an aside, in reality there has maybe been 4 or 5 times all summer that we have seen people anchor up and fish in the canal. Obviously you were one of those 4 or 5, I hope you enjoyed your time in the community.

by piclicker on Sep. 21, 2016
Flyhand i agree totally with gloveman but as far as me fishing in the canal with my boat too bad for you as you have no say AT ALL on this one. I will continue to fish the canal no matter what you have to say.

by gloveman on Sep. 20, 2016
FlyHand- I too have fished in the canal from a boat. And I too was raised differently. I would never think of walking on the private property of anyone's or using your private boat launch. I agree with yourself and Doyle that most of the shore fishermen are very disrespectful of both the private property and the attitudes they have. Im sorry to hear that this is an ongoing problem!

by FlyHand on Sep. 20, 2016
Doyle, You are correct, no one has rights over water, they all belong to us and I think that is part of the issue, people assume that because the canal is beside the water, they have free access. The water where you park your boat is public, no contesting that and you are right, it is one of the hots spots "in" the canal. Canal banks and the lots people walk across are not. Again, it is a matter of respect for property. We were raised differently. Telling someone to f.$#%# off when asked to leave their dock would have gotten me an ass whooping by my father or grandfather, different times I guess. We have picture this year of someone who actually backed their truck down to the edge so they could fish off of the tailgate.... I do not know what to say about that one, and after a person sunk their truck through the ice in the canal last winter going for a drive from the lake, i do not know what to say about that one either.. Enjoy the fishing in the canal, we do as well.

by doylejhansen on Sep. 18, 2016
sorry pushing buttons ... was wanting to say ... you should exercise your rights as an owner ... I know I would ...thank you doyle

by doylejhansen on Sep. 18, 2016
flyhand .... no need to get upset ... I saw the same thing that you witnessed ... the shore fisherman would drag the fish from the water onto the rocks .... drag them on the rocks/shore ... and then have no idea how to take out the hooks ... etc. ... as for myself and any other person that joins me fishing ... we have never walked onto the docks or any land at the canals ...so we are not trespassing and wouldn't think of doing that ... since I respect the "ownership" thing ... as far as the fouled mouthed fisherman/women ... I can't control that .. and you can't either ... if I were you I would call law enforcement and exercise your right as an owner ... I am very respectful of any fish ... and always practise catch and release .., all the time ... the time I was there ... every fall for the last three years ... and the other night ... I counted no less then 15 people fishing from the shore ... yes you may have a problem ... that would be like someone (without my permission) to have a picnic in my back yard ... but one thing you don't have is "riparian rights" ...is why I will still fish in the canals from my boat ... and last time I checked ... no amount of money can buy the water .... and I and anyone I am with will respect the fishery and your private land ... you have a nice day ... and at the end of the day ... you should excersis

by FlyHand on Sep. 17, 2016
doylejhansen don't get used to going to the canal,we homeowners are done with people fishing on private property and are shutting the fishing down as people have a lack of respect for us. I know for me personally getting told oh whatever f&@$ off I'm fishing when asking them to leave my dock is frustrating. And for how people handle the fish is a disgrace I have watched fish get drug up the bank be out of the water for up to 5 minutes and then over hand thrown back into the lack. So no don't go to the meridian canal to go fish as you will be asked to leave.

by doylejhansen on Sep. 9, 2016
this message is for tkulyk ...__ go to the meridian canals ... just got home from there .... place was on fire .... pike and walleye ... we caught 40 fish from 7 to 9 pm ....__ walleye and pike ... best place to fish ... is at the intersection of the canal entrance ... then it goes right or left ....__ all you need is the husky jerk HJ12 or hj14 in the fire tiger style about twelve dollars from Canadian tire ...__your kids will catch fish ... if not they can watch all the pike, walleye and ling(s) breaking the surface chasing minnows ...__we drove our boat in ... but all shore fisherman were all catching fish .... using 5 of diamonds and the Cyclops ....__this always happens ever September until the close of the season to 10/31/16 __have fun .... cheers doyle

Looking to take my two little boys out fishing this weekend. What would be the best bet to try fish for this time of year?
by Demon on Sep. 6, 2016
That's what I'm saying its dumd people like that, they ruin the lakes keeping fish they shouldn't. I see all the same boats out there almost every day. There a few of these guys that catch and release fish under sized or limits of 0. Some are and hats off to them. The others that are not kick in the nuts for them. I have spoke with FW about these issues, I was told to take a picture of boat, get the #s of it and call, they will search properties of people who are suspected of poaching. So I am now carrying high powered camera to do my part.

by Demon on Sep. 6, 2016

by The Hand on Sep. 6, 2016
Sep 3 more people got caught with illegal fish including walleye at the Meridian Beach Canal. This was the second time the Fish and Feathers came out in a single day. I was told by a home owner that they will be restricting access to the canal as it is private property. Thanks for actions like this, losing a good place to fish

by Demon on Sep. 5, 2016
Any body keeping walleye should be kicked in nuts, limit is 0. Miss guided people should not be allowed to fish, these people are the ones that ruin lakes.
by nod_ab1 on Sep. 1, 2016
I've been fishing Gull lake for almost 6 years now and never caught whites in fall time. Any thoughts where to catch them during this time of the year? We will be at Aspen beach this weekend and will try to catch them but just don't know where to anchor my boat.

by Brad0420 on Mar. 26, 2016
Was out today. Shallow water has less ice which is normal ( 14-15 inches ), We went as deep as 15 fow and there was 22 inches. All measured with tape. Good solid clear ice at deeper holes. Very sketchy near shore. Lots of vehicles out but I walked. Shore conditions are at point where they could rapidly change through day and could see evidence of someone breaking through in shallows by entrance. 15 + perch each for me and my nephew. Missed a decent walleye first thing. Pike were not biting though.

by Keela on Mar. 25, 2016
We fished at Wilsons Beach and the ice is still fine. We drove on as did many others. Only caught perch today but a ton of them.

by PhilR on Mar. 25, 2016
I went on at Brownlows on the 23rd and my partner and I drilled in excess of 2 dozen holes throughout the day. I measure the ice by placing the end of my scoop under the ice and marking the handle. I found the ice thickness to be anywhere from 22" to 27". Lots of ice but I can't say the fish cooperated. Curious if the i ce thickness shown at 15" to 16" is an actual measurement or a visual guess. Thanks

by Bizz on Mar. 22, 2016
Hmm not sure what that guy is going on about. Was out Saturday and Monday at brown low. Lots of ice still looking at 14-16 inches in about eight feet of water. Was a parking lot of trucks out on ice Saturday morning with no issues. Obviously less people out Monday but still spotted a few 1 tons on the ice. Stay back of old holes and you will be perfectly fine. Saw lots of whites and pike and a ton of micro perch. Enjoy it while you can guys the forecast is for more warm weather.

by Brad0420 on Mar. 11, 2016
Watch for ice holes and shallow areas. We still have 28 " of ice in Wainwright Area still but there are holes forming in ice from dark debris ( leaves, mud ect ) melting into the ice from warm sunny weather. Shallow areas are getting sketchy too near shore / accesses. One Hole I found today is 18 " x 6 ".

by LRD V8R on Mar. 3, 2016
HotDogFisher...there are rules, and severe ones: The Alberta Conservation Association is warning anglers of the potential legal ramifications of drilling holes on a frozen lake and casting a line during Alberta's long winter months. "The likelihood of being charged is very low, but the severity of being charged is very high. If you do get charged, then manslaughter is the likely result," said ACA President Todd Zimmerling.
