Range Road 42 to Sundance road, cant miss the Parking to the right few mins down the road. Fishing on both sides the main lake and the side lagoon. Solid size fish on both sides. We have never gone here an NOT catch a couple of pike and walleye. Pike anytime of day, walleye morning and late evening. Lots and Lots of shore fishing spots. Down side Mid day is pretty hot no Shade and shore is made up of mid to large size rocks. Can be hairy navigating but not too bad. TheFishinBroz -K

In this lake anything with a hook will easily catch stunted walleye and sickly pike with the greatest of ease.

Ice was still 30" thick. Some water pooling from melting snow in some locations. 4x4 had no issues. Fishing was slow for us. Few small walleye and pike seemed more interested to bite early morning. But still really picky on presentation.

Slow day yesterday (feb 9) Started off at point Alison and caught 1 walleye and didn't see much more, moved to the south east side and found active fish in 7fow, 4x4 is almost a must it'll be tough to get around in the snow without it.

Star Star Star Star Star

by Weekendwarrior on Feb. 5, 2018

Not a lot of people out yesterday. But the fishing was good caught 4 nice walleye lost 2 at the hole and missed probably 10 or more bites. These walleye are really heathy looking and are a great eating size ( I realize this is a C&R lake) I don't see why they don't have atleast a few tags for this lake. Seems to be a strong walleye fishery. Anyways orange jig head the last 2 times out have been the money maker. Good luck out there stay safe.

Star Star Star Star Star

by Weekendwarrior on Feb. 4, 2018

If anyone is out here with slow fishing try an orange jig head with a minnow . Walleye seem to be loving them . Good luck

Star Star Star Star Star

by fishing frank on Jan. 31, 2018

Went out yesterday in front of main dock and hauled in an average pike and Walleye. I missed a big walleye (approx. 5 pounds) and large pike. Only seen a few whites on camera in about 3.5 hours am.

Star Star Star Star Star

by Weekendwarrior on Jan. 28, 2018

Was out yesterday and today . Yesterday was 4 hours of nothing Today how ever I couldn't keep bait on my lines or any fish. Tons of aggressive bites but couldn't get it stuck. Tried different size jigs and hooks different hook placement on the bait. So for it being the only 2 times I've been to wab for ice fishing I'd say good lake but I have to learn the spots and techniques for this lake.

Fishy Fingers, I've been reading your comments for the last couple years on this lake. I fish this lake almost every weekend and it is hit and miss but if you put in the time you will be rewarded. We have caught walleye up to 8 pounds here and some really nice pike. Not to mention 8 plus pound burbot. There are still big girls in here you just have to find them but takes some time

Went out monday in front of docks few hundred feet out. My buddy caught 3 pike and 3 walleye between 9 am and 1pm. Saw lots on camera swim up but not attack baits. There are big healthy whitefish in there.lots swimming around in there. Find the sand bars next to the weeds. Good lucj out there everyone!

Go out from Wabamun dock line yourself up with the peak of the trees and the power pole you should catch decent fish may I add please don’t overfish this the guy that showed this to me has been fishing there his whole life and I don’t think he’d enjoy it being ruined. I only caught like 2 fish but missed like 10 other fish flag went off twice both times bait was gone.

Geez, what's with all the dissing? Let's just get to the good stuff! What cares about all the bs some people are supposedly coming up with. I've had both great days and crappy days on the ice this year. I've caught a few big ones some days and not even a small walleye but on other days I've caught no pike and 30 small walleyes. Anyways, cut the bs, focus on the good things, like fishing!

Smellygunts...my wife and I own a lake front property on Wabamun. Prior to our purchase we researched many lakes in Alberta and found out through all the so called experts that Wabamun is one of if not the cleanest lakes in Alberta...just wanted to back your father inlaws statement.

Star Star Star Star Star

by smellygunts on Jan. 19, 2018

That's a 100% complete false statement FishyFinger! My father in law does water quality and control for Alberta lakes. It's actually quite the opposite. This lake is one of the cleanest in Alberta even after the spill. Gull/Pigeon and lac st Anne are a mess. He was saying they are years and years away from trying to get those lakes to recover.

by fishing frank on Jan. 19, 2018

Hello all, gee's after my last comment there was sure a lot of feed back. I still stand by my comments, yesterday in front of main town the pike show continued but much more slower. I did pull out a 10lb plus and one at about 4lbs. I did not see a single walleye or white on my camera which I thought was kind of strange. Maybe Pike are re-establishing their territory? who knows. The best aspect of this lake is the fact its only about 45mins from the city. Its a great place for family and if Fishy-Fingers should complain anything it should be about the garbage left behind after some have left the ice. I have stop a few times the gather up the garbage. I am glad its a catch and release, maybe after a few more years the size and quantity of fish will re-establish but mother nature will do most of the work. Good luck to all and most important have fun.

by FISHY-FINGER on Jan. 18, 2018

I guess if u like mediocre fishing Wab is your place. My cousinn landed a 27 lb jack today at my lake. If you fish Wan you will get 27lbs of fish a week. There is fish to be caught in wab but nothing big. The walleye/spill have destroyed it. Around 2010 i coukd catch 2-3 pike in the mid and upper teens every trip, with the 20's every 2nd trip. I just think we should all be mad that this lake has is victim to a walleye stocking disater , just like LLB lake. I can barely name 3-4 lakes where you can keep 1 walleye and maybe 2-3 lakes where you can keep more then 1 walleye. Fish Sebert for example. They need to be 100cm, they are all 92-96cm, guess whats dead floating in the weeds....yup , every pike just under. Awesome management! I don't think Wab should ever open especially after that cancer ridden toxic spill, early reports said a mon of 50 yrs before it clears up enough for fish to safety be estim. FISH ON

Great day of fishing today! 9 pike 4 walleye 400 meters from main pier in Wab and about 15 meters west. 1 decent size walleye but the pike were crazy! (1) 11lber (3) 5lbers a few average and 1 long skinny one. This is the 2nd time out this year. Last Saturday we caught 8 pike and 2 walleye. The pike were small to average with another long skinny and 1 tiny walleye and 1 4lber which is the biggest I've caught in that species. 10-12ft of water. White jig heads with minnows(no bodies)

Star Star Star Star Star

by MrTwister on Jan. 17, 2018

fishing frank...couldn't agree more with your last comment. I know a lot of people that like to take their kids to Wabamun to catch fish of any kind and of any size. Even though it is a catch and release lake...the kids along with their parents still have a blast and will remember the experience for a very long time. I agree that Fishy Finger should maybe travel to SK of MB to enjoy his fishing.

Star Star Star Star Star

by fishing frank on Jan. 17, 2018

Hello Fishy Fingers, what can I say. I have been fishing the lake for many years and although it has changed due to the pressure and oil spill it is still a pretty good lake to have some fun. There's will be a time where the walleyes will be trophy size but not for a while. The fisheries are doing there best to bring back the lake to its glory days of yesterday and also as for my pike catching the other day I have no reason to lie. Maybe your presentation and technique may be lacking? not saying mine is better but maybe. Enjoy the lake for what it is and with you making so many derogatory comments towards it maybe try some other lakes around, just saying.

Star Star Star Star Star

by MrTwister on Jan. 17, 2018

Fishy - Finger for someone who does not like this lake you sure seem to fish it a lot...you may also want to take a look at some of the pics that were recently posted on Anglers Atlas before commenting on large pike.

Star Star Star Star Star

by FISHY-FINGER on Jan. 17, 2018

I can't believr guys ask for locations, depths etc , Do want him to bait the hook and jig it too? This lake is done for big pike, read the posts. If you have been out 5 times this winter you should've figured this out. There is a technique to this lake. I catch a dozen sickly pike each time but have moved on because I except that its ruined by the walleye experiment. Try for the stunted walleye if you can't catch pike. I went 4 hrs north and the pike are hige

Star Star Star Star Star

Fishing Frank, I find it hard to believe 8 Pike in 5-7hr day on the lake I assume lol. Not saying your lying but dam that's pretty impressive! Been fishing this lake for 15yrs and use to be great but the few years Pike haven't been that common for me anymore. Been out maybe 5 times this winter and caught only 1 and seen maybe 5 or 6 on Camera in total. What area were you fishing fallis, seba, townsite, etc?? And what depths? Thanks!

If you call fish and game they can give a link to a survey that they are conducting on a bunch of lake in Alberta including wabamun I think it's important to voice our opinions and complaints. Fished off fallis yesterday. We had steady action of 14%u201D walleye all day. Fished from 12-25ft. Couldn't get away from them little buggers..... it's better then nothing but not at all what we were after. Ps. Driving on at fallis is a challenge at the moment for those with average or low clearance. Large heave right as you access the lake. 7 trucks parked on shore, not one guy attempted to drive over it. It's safe, it's on shore, a few trucks have done it as there are a few tracks.

I fish this lake exclusive also for 12-14yrs, been out 3 times this year the winter for 6-7hrs each time and I've seen 2 small pike and caught 0. You don't need a WIN card if you're over 65, unless you apply for a walleye tag, which of course doesn't apply to Wabamun 'cause it's all catch and release.

Star Star Star Star Star

by JohnJack on Aug. 8, 2017

Walleye everywhere, you shake a tree anywhere near the lake and a dozen Walleye fall out of it...WTF?

The people that live on the lake are no different and shouldn't be an exception whether or not you're able to keep a fish. Rules are rules and if you're breaking them I hope you're caught!

Star Star Star Star Star

Hello Kricketts, yes you need a fishing license and all are catch and release. Try to use barbless hooks to minimize damage to fish. At the main boat launch you can rent boats just go through the gates to office.

The biologists that think they know what their doing is ST*P*D!! Too many Walleye... cannot even land single pike. Mind you the lake whitefish are even harder to catch than pike in the fall and winter... The Walleye changed the ecosystem of this lake.

Why would anyone want to eat a fish out of this toxic cesspool? Have we all forgotten about the toxic spill? Early reports estimated it would take 50 yrs to clean up naturally. Would you eat just a lil bit of poison?

Star Star Star Star Star

by furbearingtrout on Jun. 29, 2017

Why no more big pike? It isn't the walleye the 2 species coexist in many other lakes... Wonder if the fish scientists screwed it all up by adding too many baby walleyes? I have seen sick looking pike (thin and with damage from lures) as some of you mentioned as well. Anyhow my best luck this year has been fishing off my own pier (Rich's Pt). These walleye are almost TOO easy to catch, although my son loves it. I remember the 90's out here you'd catch way less fish, but some of those pike were freakishly large.__I have asked around and it looks like the next time the Govt will review Wabamun's fishing status (maintain C&R or allow some to be taken) is unfortunately going to be in 2020! There are documents floating around online that suggest they want to go even further after that review should the stocks not recover, meaning banning fishing altogether in certain areas of the lake (probably all the good spots!)

Yes ever bear there are a few big eyes. They were likely transplants from Ste.Anne but they are few and far between. Same with the large pike now. They will never open up Wabamun to retention with the pressure it gets being so close to the city. Wabamun best days are long gone.

Star Star Star Star Star

by NorthernYaker on May. 27, 2017

Yes the Millions of walleye that have been dumped into this lake are out competing the pike and whitefish for food. Most pike are now sickly skinny and won't survive after you release them. It's too bad used to be a Great Lake. Still good if you like catching stunted 14" walleye though...

Star Star Star Star Star

by brad_bjornson1 on May. 27, 2017

To the fellow asking about needing a canoe, no power boats are allowed it's a big lake. To the fellow asking about walleye out competing the Pike for food, big pike will eat walleye and not just little ones, walleye up to and probably over 4 pounds. The bigger female pike may have already headed out to deeper water to eat their probably favourite forage, whitefish.

I'm told the fish were given a clean bill of health and are safe to eat. I believe our government is not doing the lake or the tax paying fishermen,or mother nature any favours by the restrictions of only catch and release allowed. There needs to be policing to stop overfishing but the policy as it stands at this lake will only diminish the quality of the fish and it will ultimately reduce the weaker species to a point of extinction with only dominant species left in the lake.

MitoMan I was there today and can confirm everything you mentioned. In fact I can repeat it all again. 3 of us had 3 bites on tip up and got off. Were you one of the guys with 2 gals and a fire pit? We were close to shallow area with red Eskimo 6 man tent. I might have came by and talked to you.

Such a slow day on Fallis today. 3 picky bites on the tip ups and all spitted up the bait!! 4 guys full day and no fish!! Ice is so weak at the boat launch. I could see 2 tracks for cars stuck on the snow all the way to the water. Even walking was scary on this brittle snow. Ice was more than 2 ft thick on the fall off though, just can't understand how it can be so weak by the shore. I guess that's it for Fallis beach this winter.

Troy78, the fumes from that colan stive have takin affect on your judgement. The spill has definately had a huge impact , anyone who has fished this lake has caught deformed or very skinny fish with a large head, many with open sores on their body. As mentioned , drop a camera down, I had been doing this for yrs and am not seeing anywhere near the numbers of large pike as before. We have haf multiple trips to Wab where we were running most of the day for our tip ups. I remember one particular time it waa -20 or colder and the bite was on, we pulled our lines out so we had a cjance to warm up, multiple double and triple headers between the 2 of us. We iced a ton of pike in the upper teens and some in the 20's. This hasnt happened in many yrs. I discovered a technique and a bait that works very well and especially good on Wab, it doesnt seem to matter now because the big pike numbers are a fraction of yester. Year.

Fishy fingers your Arms must be broke from patting yourself on the back. A few problems with your story. First the spill on the lake happened in 2005 and in 2009 you iced 3 pike over 25 in 20 mins. Seems the spill took four years to take effect. Plus you yarded in 3 giant pike in 20 mins. I once caught a Coleman lantern and it was still lit. Not saying that there hasn't been a decline in the # of large fish being caught but I doubt the spill and the walleye are the only reason for you not catching a dozen large pike per trip. You also forget that the wab plant was decommissioned in 2010 an the current coming from the plant was a huge spawning ground for the whitefish. I have fished this lake for over 30 years that's 1987 and it used to have a good population of whites, perch, pike, an walleye. Yes that's right walleye and during that time I also caught pike over 20 lbs plus walleye in the 8 pound range. Wabamun is a large lake capable of supporting all these species. And for the rest of you wanting to know fishy fingers secret remember. He who tells the best lie is the best fisherman.

Star Star Star Star Star

by FISHY-FINGER on Dec. 31, 2016

Gudluk sounds like u had dumluk, i have iced many 20 lb pike from wab over 10yrs . Infact in 2009 i iced 3 over 25 lbs in 20 minutes. I have seen a steady decline in large pike since then . If you spent some time reading F&W/biologists early studies on fish populations in the first few yrs after the spill you would understand whats happening right now. First it was the white fish who suffered huge nimbers of casualties and not spawning , as a result the big pike numbers declined slowly. An introduction of millions of walleye put an even bigger impact on bait numbers . It wasnt until 3-4 yrs ago that it seems like there are many hammer handle size pike and the big (20 lb plus) are very few in number. Drop a camera and look for yourself. I use to catch several pike in the teens every trip and 1-2 in the twenties every other. I have ice fished this lake and many others , I have out fished all my friends and have won a few ice fishing tournaments so theres no fluke or "mis understanding" the fish problem here! I go to a lake in the northern Alberta and can ice 12-25lb fish at any time. I read maps and study the lake depths and currents, these are key to finding the big fish. Also you must know the type of fish in the lake and understand why "big" pike prefer certain bait fish and where and why the bait fish hang out. Do some reading and understand all the above mentioned then tell me I'm me I'm wrong!

Zero reports of huge pike over 20 lbs for those who believe the spill of toxic poison had zero effect on trophy fish, I have fished this lake since 2007 so save your BS for someone else. This lake is/was doomed to sustain trophy pike. With 30 yrs of ice foshing exp I can honestly say our governments " walleye" experience has failed, the proof is in Wabamin, LLB and Pigeon lake. Their attempt to fulfill anglers dream of an exc walleye fishery has failed miserably. There is a zero chance of any balance in an ecosystem where they over populate 1 predator or another. Walleye are a very aggressive predator that school in large numbers and decimate "bait" fish populations with a huge appetite. To ever think that Wab will ever attain a nature balance is crazy, what do you think would happen if they stocked any lake with pike to match the same numbers as walleye in Wab? Common sense has eluded our biologists.

by pikebuster17 on Dec. 26, 2016

by Steve77 on Dec. 25, 2016

Fenwick - Fallis is usually a great place for kids. 10-15' of water. There is almost always someone out there for you to see where to fish. Off the point there is usually less action, but if you go where the majority of people go, you should see some Walleye without waiting all day. Nothing big, but generally consistent action. The odd Pike will come through as well. Good luck and happy fishing! I hope the kids enjoy!

by Steve77 on Dec. 25, 2016

I have drilled over 20 holes at South Seba and Fallis over the last week. Nothing under 18". Don't take my word for it though. Drill test holes until you are confident! Two things to point out though. There is a huge pressure ridge off the point at Fallis. You might not want to drive too close to that without drilling some holes first. I was probably 200-400 yards from it at the closest. Also, make sure you check where you are driving on at Fallis. The wind has drifted snow close to shore, and you need 4wd and really good tires. The snow is quite a bit deeper in some spots compared to others off shore. Grab a shovel and dig a bit to check the depth before driving on. If you don't believe me, ask Pikebuster17.

Brad04 The pike are starving, I've caught dozens that are severly sick and skinny. Their head belonged to a 6-7lb fish bit they weighed 2-3. The spill killed numerous whites, perch and other "bait" fish . The introduction of thousands of competeing walleye collapsed any hope of huge pike making it. They def are reproducing but the numbers of big fish is waaaaay down. The fav food of big pike are whites because their high oil content and the numbers are deminished.

Pike Eat Walleye, Lots of lakes with lots of walleye ( which Wabamun is not one of those lakes by any measure) tend to have large pike too ( look as Sask where you can catch tons Walleye and big ones and still hook up 27-30 lb pike consistently. The pike are not starving there they have more food with walleye in lake ( pike will eat anything ). 2 Factors that are leading to smaller pike is warm summers we have had which kill off bigger fish especially pike in shallower lakes due to lack of o2 and pike need cool water. Also the train spill will pollute water and the chemicals will be present in bait fish ect. These build up in Predator fish like pike, the bigger the fish the more they eat and absorb the chemicals which build up in them and make them sick. I also would not eat anything from Wab for years. That is why there is a 0 limit on everything there, the fish still Carry Chemicals from spill and will for years and years. Walleye are native to the lake but have been fished out many times. This is another attempt to restore this lake to its old glory ( wab was Wallleye Fishery to that fed Edmonton up to the 30's when they first fished it out ).

by iFish Guest on Nov. 29, 2016

Yes, the shore is frozen... 8 feet out the ice is less than half an inch thick though. Be smart folks, let it freeze up a bit more on the main lake. I walked out in town and over at Seba about 100 yards. In town there was 3" of ice, at Seba about 1". Everywhere else around the lake is still wide open water. Play safe.

Fish and Wildlife screwed up this lake by introducing the walleye. What a messed up fish to add to this lake when all the other lakes around it are already full of walleye. You can't even keep walleye!!! Have to buy tags. The walleye have messed up the lake whitefish population. If I ever get chance to catch walleye from Wabamun I would keep every single one I catch.

Lots of small pike and numerous walleye. Some of the walleye were up around 2 - 3 pounds, not bad for a lake that had ZERO walleye just a few years ago. Fish any area with a rocky/sandy bottom in 12 - 20 feet of water and you'll get the walleyes.

I've been fishing this lake the last two years since moving here from Ontario. When I target Pike I use all my old Muskie lures, 7in+ sized lures, when doing this all I catch is Pike. If you are tossing out "smaller" sized lures, you will run into Walleye. Yes the Walleye population is getting bigger at Wabs but that just shows how great of a fishery it is. There are many other variables when that come into play but if you want to target Pike, size up your lures and you'll keep those small eyes away! Tight lines

Suckers are present, around high flow areas such as cn bridge. I personally had luck with the following: whitefish, perch, walleye, pike and burbout. I did not catch anything else out of this lake. Star Star Star Star Star

by Clave on Jun. 29, 2016

Yes Walleye eat white fish but only in the smaller sizes. This is why there are no small whitefish in Pigeon just very big ones as they are beyond prey size now. You might want to call the area biologist or the Provincial Minister in charge of ESRD (or what ever they call it today) if you would like to have input. Unfortunately unless they open walleye take limits in Wab it's probably already too late as the experiment has begun with the expected consequences.

Star Star Star Star Star

Ok. Second trip to Wab. Used my favourite Wab lure. (Used to catch 20 pike in 2 hrs) In 4 hours Caught 2 super small pike, one good sized pike and 3 tiny walleye. Very different lake now. Part of all our WIN card and fishing fees pays to pump walleye into Wab. Just asking why? I know pike eat whitefish. Do walleye? Wab rapidly becoming Pigeon lake with tons of Whitefish and Walleyewith a few scared pike. How can we have input into this fishery. Left to their devices the government will turn a great local pike lake into Pigeon: Overfilled with Walleye you can't keep and Whitefish you can't catch.

Star Star Star Star Star

by Clave on Jun. 28, 2016

The walleye are definitely taking over and the pike are suffering because of it. Unfortunately pike don't eat any appreciable amounts of walleye so the 11.7 million walleye they stocked in will just decimate the other species. Just like they have done in all the other lakes this has been tried.

Cpt Jack. Just a quick note you may want to consider. Large pike eat all sized walleye. Med Pike eat small to med sized walleye. Also Walleye are native to Wab. They have been fished of lake multiple times. They are putting them back to restore balance. Essentially putting walleye in a lake with pike will only provide More food for med to large sized pike not less.

Star Star Star Star Star

by Captain Jack on Jun. 23, 2016

Interesting few hours. Caught several small walleye and a few skinny pike. The walleye are taking over. June at Wab used to be 100% medium and large Pike. If they keep pumping walleye in from Lac Ste Anne I'm afraid the days of guaranteed big pike might be over. Wonder what Natural Resources are thinking putting healthy fish from a clean lake into an oil polluted lake where you can't keep anything.

I don't think Eskimo98 is saying the lake is dead I more think he's concerned that it will be dead with the walleye being the top predator in the lake, but theres enough variety of fish that they should keep the balance. perch love fish eggs so with a large perch count they should keep the numbers in check, I personally would like them to open up Genesee Lake again, if I remember right the restocking of wabamun was from Genesee. Besides it's 10 minutes for me instead of 40 minutes to wabamun

Star Star Star Star Star

by CaptainJackSparrow on Mar. 28, 2016

I don't understand your statement Eskimo98 . If your saying the perch are dead or gone from this lake your sadly mistaken. My son caught 9 and I caught 4 from the lake the other day.perch are very abundant in this lake, only the young are at risk larger perch have the natural characteristic traits which make them quite unappealing to other fish (ctenoid scales and there spiny ray) I would say walleye are the least of there worries as I do not believe there count is large enough to be a concern, and as fish eggs are on the perch menu the balance will probably be fine. I'm more concerned about some of us using the lake being the problem the sight I saw at Lakeview the other day was bs. Garbage everywhere on the ice, is it to hard to bring a garbage bag, there cheaper than some of the equipment you use in your tackle box, only takes bout another 2 minutes to clean up at the end of the day. Sad.

Star Star Star Star Star

by Brad0420 on Mar. 27, 2016

@Eskimo98 Walleye were native to this lake but were fished out multiple times ( I think the first time was 1930's ) multiple attempts have been made to bring walleye back to the lake but people fished them out everytime ( commercial fishing, netting ect ). Now with 0 limits and no more commercial fishing they are attempting to bring the lake back to its original state. Which is right. The lake will find its balance. Lakes have always had perch and walleye. Just because a lake was fished out of walleye and become a " awesome perch lake " because the perch took over lake with less predators, does not mean the walleye should not be brought back to lake they were fished out of !!!.

Went out on Thursday west of Fallis- got 8 jack and 2 walleye in 15 ft of somewhat murky water. Still 18" of ice out there and the cold kept the surface frozen so I drove on but I did break through a little right against the shore. Be extra cautious out there now.

by CaptainJackSparrow on Mar. 18, 2016

Sorry Micheal I haven't been on in a couple of days so I didn't catch your text. I did go to seba it's not bad there but the day didn't help, the water was very cloudy and it got worse as the day went on. Went from seeing 10 ft down to 4 ft, as we all know fishing gets worse in merky water. Only 7 on the day lost a lot of the hook, would have been a 15 day. Got a great story though, caught a 33 inch fat pike and then my son got one right after, we were both realign in at the same time and my son was struggling with his catch as I got the pike to the hole we realized the pike had taken both hooks and my son was fighting against me. So to get him out I had my son let some line out as the fish was bobbing in my hole, but the bugger cut my line so I quickly got the spreaders in his mouth and pulled him out. Had my son lay down beside him and took a pic, counted that catch for both of us as it was a team effort. I fished at the spot north of the red marker posts in the lake, didn't know where else to fish as I have never fished seba before, wasn't much further of a drive.

Ice Report: 20 in
Very soft and slushy on top. Lots of cracks in the ice. A few vehicles on the ice, but I wouldn't recommend it anymore. I parked and walked out. Better safe than sorry. Ice may be thick, but with all the cracks and air pockets starting in the ice, it's best to walk on the ice. This report is for Seba beach only. I don't know about the remainder of the lake. I only fish here at Seba. Hope this helps.

Anyone else have successful lures they've tried?

Star Star Star Star Star

by CaptainJackSparrow on Mar. 14, 2016

For lures I've never had a problem with using a combo of neon yellow, orange and white jigs. Use a black head with yellow eyes. Jigs can be single or double tail, try to find the ones with a little pearl metallic flake in them to catch the light. Use them with or without minnows or cut up smelt. Always been able to catch pike and burbot on them

Star Star Star Star Star

by CaptainJackSparrow on Mar. 14, 2016

DICE Derby, if you take a straight hook put it in a minnow, or smelt and drop in on the sand or weed bed a white will suck it of the floor just like spaghetti. They are a bottom feeder and will usually ignore anything above the lake floor, I've had them push lure and line out of the way to get at bait on the floor. Well I think that we're going to go out to seba on Thursday my boy really wants a walleye before the end of season. Thanks for putting the liver theory to bed, means I don't have to pick any up to try it, guess it does mainly only work on catfish. Probably head out early so I can find where you get on to the seba side, I'll be in the black tent if anyone wants to sa hi

by Michael Gleaves on Mar. 14, 2016

Well I read on here that liver works great and that there were a lot of catches with that bait. I gave it the benefit of the doubt and bought some pig liver. Fished all day with a pickerel rig on. Minnow on one and liver on the other. Not one bite on the liver at all. My lady and I had four hooks with liver. They always took the minnow every time. I even switched the liver to the bottom hook where they were biting on the minnow. Then they switched and took the top hook with the minnow. Goes to show that srories are plain bull****. So now I can officially say that the comments I read about liver are just crap. On the other hand, we caught 11 fish between the two of us. All pike. Biggest was about 6 lbs. no scale so I have to estimate. Ice lost about 2 inches melted yesterday. Turned out to be gorgeous despite the wind in the morning and early afternoon.

Star Star Star Star Star

Ok Fishlips I did do research, it has very little to do with science and more to do with behavioral instinct of a fish. And anyone can learn basic bait and lure usage of fish with a little lougling (conterary to what companies say there is no super bait or lure) and really there is no technique to fishing. Maybe most of the flac your getting is with your "stuff it in your face" attitude towards other fishers and people posting try relaxing it's a friendly forum where people come to inquire and generally talk, if you have a problem with a poster, like most forums I'm sure they have a ticket submission section for forum abuse, or ultimately in the end does it really matter what others that you have never met think?

So to help Fishlips out a little with all the flac he is taking I did some research on the use of liver and it's history. Liver has been used for many years it's results vary from species to species. All forms of liver can be used but pork registers the best results. In fact they state that any meat from a pig will work good the more greasy the better as it is the oil that the fish are attracted to not the shape of the cut. There is a word of caution though check your local laws on the useage of bait for the lake you are fishing on, animal remains are not allowed on most lakes in Alberta and can result in a hefty fine if caught. As far as I know wabamun has no bait restrictions so fish on

The below post was the quickest depth chart I could find, unfortunately people want to get payed for these go figure. It looks like the deepest points are 10 - 12 metres and drop by 1-2 metres every ring you move inland with a few island high points. I've always found island points to be good fishing spots, hasse lake island was awesome for fish now it's a dead lake, another lake you can blame the province for killing once parkland county took over the reigns it died a slow poisonous algae death. It was the lake of my childhood R.I.P.

Most people won't give up there hot spots, get an app called micro qibla for your phone. It's a free GPS app that doesn't use data. When you find a spot you fish that's good to you write down the longitude and latitude so you can find it again. Most fishing is trial and error and fish do migrate around the lake but will instinctually return to good feeding spots, that's why you will see the same fish (scars, markings) from time to time. I keep seeing this monster with a white patch on him, wish he would take my hook, if I do ever catch him I will post. It's starting to become mine and my boys conquest

Don't be insulted lots of us have favorite spots we fish all the time, and I said I would try your theory and see if our fish count increases, I have read of it working on catfish. Im 40 yrs old and I have also Hurd many tall tale in my years of fishing, we caught 100 fish.......the fish I missed was 10 feet long, so on and so forth I question anomolies, not techniques as all sorts of things work. Don't be insulted people question lots of things, some things you will take more flack on than others, as I said your advise is welcome this is an open forum. How long were you fishing the other day?

Star Star Star Star Star

by CaptainJackSparrow on Mar. 11, 2016

Fish lips your advise is welcome like all others, pike are meat eaters, but they rely on smell in there olfactory sensors to pickup the bait and vibrations in the water, visual is usually the last sense used for a pike, but they say they can see color of some spectrum. But if you want to give your advise be truthful you say you caught 43 fish between 2 in how many hours? You must have got lucky and dropped into a fish pool. I'm no angler but my best day between me and my oldest boy has been 26 fish on this lake (various sizes) and that was a full day, this of course does not include all the disinterested fish that swam by. You must have struck on every fish in the pool you were in. I will try your liver theory next year and prove it's facts for myself, until then I say good job

by FISHLIPS on Mar. 11, 2016

If you don't want my advice then don't try liver, this is the second time I gave a tip only to have been insulted. Star Star Star Star Star

by Lachmanator on Mar. 10, 2016

Fallis is an excellent spot , atleast I found so for myself. You can go down range road 52 ( the exit to fallis and it will take you down a road that's and then it'll be a steep incline. Take your first right off that road and follow that until you hit a 4 way intersection ,take a left ( the right will be a dead end ) and then you'll go over the train tracks , hang a left at the fork and follow it around, there will be 2 main access point and both of them are easy to see. If you don't want your car on the lake at all then they'll be a small parking lot just before you see those access points, you'll have a few places you can unload and then go from there , you'll see people out there and then just jump in the line they are following on the lake, they usually are pretty close to the drop of spot

Star Star Star Star Star

by CaptainJackSparrow on Mar. 10, 2016

So if someone could please help me on other locations around wabamun say fallis, seba beach and lake view. Where I can park and pull a sled not to far I would be greatful. We usually end our season around this time as the geese return to the area and bed down, they make a heck of a racket and stur up the water which drives the fish away, that and the shore is already breaking 2 meters in. Map markers would be very helpful, thanks everyone, good season

Star Star Star Star Star

by CaptainJackSparrow on Mar. 10, 2016

Basically in 20 years I find it has less to do with bait and more on the lure you use and how you move it I've had fish disinterested in a lure and start to turn away, then you quick drop it in the sand bring it up to there height and bam they take it. I've had fish leaving while jigging so I move back and forth and they take it. I've had days when I forgot bait and they bit on a combo of yellow, orange and white jigs. I've even caught pike on spoons. Let's face it pike are gabate machines, but picky garbage machines. They like there food to move but not to hard to catch, colors, lengths, widths all very, but in the end all fish are different, but the same see food eat food. So if someone says they wrapped whatever on there lure I can't see it not working unless I tried. His catch count is what makes the story a little fishy but again I wasn't there.

Wish this site allowed multiple links in out comment, keep in mind this is for new ideal clear ice, the ice we are on now is already in deterioration. As a side project you should pick up or make some ice picks. To make use a 2 x 2 cut 4 inches long pre drill one end 2 inches down the size of a 3.5 inch deck screw head, then pre drill the other side to prevent splitting. Now screw the deck screw in, cover the handle in hockey tape or non slip grip tape and there you go ice picks, make 2 and carry them on you

Give me a minute and I will look for the ice chart and rules, you have to keep in mind ice thickness strength is minus the 3-4 inches of frost ice (the white ice on the top) solid clear ice is the only ice that can be counted for thickness, the ice is also weaker when it is full of bubbles. One sec I'll LOUGLE the ice rules

Star Star Star Star Star

by Lachmanator on Mar. 4, 2016

Thanks captain , I know as soon as your tires touch that ice there is no insurance,. Will be heading out tomorrow to fallis

Star Star Star Star Star

by CaptainJackSparrow on Mar. 4, 2016

The main issue with this time of year is that the ice is no longer freezing over night, even more now with these high temps. The holes you drilled the day before will still be open the next day. Right now with the ice being 17- 20 inch thick and cracking it's like a giant tight jigsaw puzzle but soon heat and oxygen will get into the cracks and and loosen the puzzle and it will start heaving, that and creating a wake from driving on to fast. A friend of mine drives the ice roads. Just be cautious, better to walk a little that the cost of getting pulled out, not sure if insurance covers a sunken vehicle

Star Star Star Star Star

by Lachmanator on Mar. 4, 2016

Thanks "jawjacker" o sorta figured that about driving on but there was just an uncomfortable amount of cracking for my liking, even when I was unscrewing one of my ice anchors from my tent that caused a massive Crack and cracked throughout all my holes; just was a little unsettling. I heard it's normal because ice contracts and expands and of course that makes sense but if the ice cracks every 10 seconds or so should I be worried ?

Star Star Star Star Star

by Jaw jacker on Mar. 4, 2016

Hey lachmanator. I am no ice expert, but my "safe to drive on" minimum thickness is 12-14 inches. After that I start parking on land and walk out with the sled.

Star Star Star Star Star

by CaptainJackSparrow on Mar. 3, 2016

I agree with jaw jacker if you bring it out take it back with you, the holes in the ice should be the only thing you leave behind. How's the ice by fallis? I was out last Sunday and caught 23 , 18 pike , 4 whites and one big burbot. Ice was cracking a ton, just got into ice fishing last year. How much cracking until one should feel obligated to get off the lake? Please share your ice knowledge

You should have to write an IQ test before you get your fishing license. It would prevent idiots from fishing. I picked up more garbage today than I throw out in a week. You idiots who litter, where do you think the garbage goes? Have some respect and pick up your garbage.

by Ride rank on Mar. 3, 2016

Went out the other day for pike, kept seeing them and some whites swim around but couldn't get them to bite so out of desperation my buddy put a piece of banana on to mix things up, it ended up falling off and a white took it immediately so we switched to small hooks and put some banana on it sunk it right to the bottom with a little slack in the line and it worked amazing for the whites I would have never guessed I'd catch a fish on banana. All the whites we caught were about 3 and a half pounds. 15' of water.

I have a doubt about the guys who are saying they talked to F&W are telling them Wab has a zero limit on the fish because they want to create a trophy lake for pike&walleye. If this was the case then why isn't perch, ling and whites open? Because the lake is still toxic i say! Theres no way that in just a few yrs its clean with that toxic crap dumped in there and the volume. Not to mention the toxic mercury pumping into the air right beside the lake . I have fished here for many yrs and the fish pop has declined 10 fold! There are big ones to be caught yet but less

Wasn't just you I h8 Weeds. I was out on Sunday at Fallis as well. Probably from 12-4ish. Used minnows and had probably 5-6 lines in the water at any given time with our group and 2 tip ups. Only got a couple of bites on the one tip up. Sat in the tent for probably 45min otherwise I was outside jigging. When I was in the tent I saw one small Jack and that was it. We were the farthest east of everyone though. Going to try more west tomorrow even though east seemed better for me last year. The guy beside us apparently got a couple big jacks from what he said.

The pike are they way they are because of the walleye. Given you can catch wimpy walleye in pretty much every lake in the area and province for that matter I wish they would have left Wab alone.__Who wants to catch wimpy walleye if you can' eat them anyway.

by Wally diver on Feb. 3, 2016

The pike are the way they are was because of the power plant and let me guess your still fishing the same spots when the plant was operating, now it's gone and so are the fish, they just follow the bait fish like a buck follows a doe so quit blameing every one else because u had a bad day of fishing ( it's still better than work)

by Wally diver on Feb. 3, 2016

Walleye are better than a dirty old jack anyway !

Star Star Star Star Star

by Wally diver on Feb. 3, 2016

In the summer time you can't keep either one off your hook, and the big jacks are in there they hide under you boat and latch on to you walleye as you bring them in, the lake is just fine, I think if your not catching pick up and move to a new spot the lake is big!!

Star Star Star Star Star

by FISHLIPS on Jan. 28, 2016

So basically everyone is saying thst because there was warm water running into wab the fish were bigger? Explain to me why pike are non existant in most of the USA where the water is warm all the time. Simple, big pike don't like warm water. All northern lakes have huge fish, first less anglers, second no over stocking lakes with walleye. F&W are trying to play god. 11.7 million walleye ? Really? Gee I don't know why wab is collapsing? Throw 11.7 million pike in there and see what happens to the rest of the fish. The only thing that has changed is the over stocking.

Star Star Star Star Star

by Clave on Jan. 28, 2016

WB Absolutely I will remember the warmer water theory if the walleye are ever extirpated from Wab and it remains closed. Unfortunately we will have to wait at least 20-30 years to find out the answer to that. Which is another reason I don't think the experiment should have been started in the first place.

by FISHLIPS on Jan. 28, 2016

Oh I'm still catching big fish, I have a wicked spot and texhnique. If you read a few posts back I did a tour of the lake and fished by others to see what was being caught where. My general concensus is that there are alot less big fish. I managed a 16&18 last trip but overall this lake is doomed as a trophy lake. Last time I discussed my catch you all cried to the mod!

Star Star Star Star Star

by WhiskeyBreath on Jan. 27, 2016

When the walleye do not reproduce like they did in the 80/90's and fish size continues to decline, remember the warmer water. I have read reports where the zooplankton has steadily decreased since 2011,. It's not like the whitefish population which needs this as a food source has exploded. Colder water, less bugs, less whitefish, smaller predator fish. Pretty simple, we now have another Las Ste. Anne

Star Star Star Star Star

by Clave on Jan. 27, 2016

Lac St. Anne allways had walleye competing with the pike. So did Lake Isle, Lac la none, etc. Not to mention the others lakes are smaller than wab

Star Star Star Star Star

by WhiskeyBreath on Jan. 27, 2016

How do you explain fish size difference between the neighbouring lakes. There have been more big fish at wabamun for the last 30 years with the warmer water. The haven't stocked 11.7M walleye in Lac Ste. Anne and the fish size is no were near that of Wabamun.

Star Star Star Star Star

by Clave on Jan. 27, 2016

The power plant is a red herring. They did not stock Wab with 11.7 million walleye back in the 80's/90's. It was much fewer and they allowed harvest and retention of the walleye back then. Consequently they were soon gone and did not have nearly the effect the walleye are having now. If you look up the fall walleye index netting data you will see that in pretty much every case as they manage lake for walleye the pike, perch ,and in a number of cases, whitefish populations plummet.

Safe to drive truck out on lake today for fishing?

Star Star Star Star Star

by WhiskeyBreath on Jan. 27, 2016

I agree Bully. We should sign a petition to allow the powerplants to dump the hot water back into the lake. The big fish we are catching now are still from the Wabamun power plant era. At least with catch and release they are not being harvested, but in my opinion the size will continue to decline and it will become the same quality of fishery as the other lakes in the immediate area

Star Star Star Star Star

by Bully wahshanski on Jan. 27, 2016

Fishlips - I think we should ask them to fire up the power plant and use the lake as a cooling pond again. Monster pike and walleye came because of the warm water. They stocked this lake with walleye in the 80's and 90's and didn't affect the pike fishery. In the 90's we use to catch 20lb pike and 6lb walleye every trip to power plant outlet channel.

Star Star Star Star Star

by FISHLIPS on Jan. 27, 2016

The fishing has been on a steady decline for the last 3 yrs atleast. Most people are reporting tiny fish that look to be starving. This is no longer a trophy lake! Most people that do report a bigger fish are not exceeding 15lbs and this weight was was use to be a norm to catch any where on the lake. Everyone needs to tell the fish cops the fish are skinny and starving. Sure glad they dumped over 11 million walleye in here! Might aswell throw some musky in here now to clean up the over population of walleye.

Whitefish are numerous and a lot of big ones...but also small ones which to me shows a healthy population. If anything is doing fine in that lake its the whitefish. No clue what the fish and game are talking about...they have kept it closed for all these years due to lawsuits against them if they opened it and someone got sick while eating one due to the train spill. That's all they care about. They don't care the pike are dying. Trophy fishery their trying for? Lol try opening up some walleye and pike then (under a certain size)...common sense tells you they won't get trophy size with that much competition for the food sources there. Fish and Game is just sad. And it's always different excuses their giving people, that's the funny part.

Spoke to the conservation officer of the area on the weekend. He said lake would not be opening to retention anytime soon . Yes a trophy lake is what they are working towards. The Whites are the ones who are having a hard time according to them. I fished the lake for last month or so Have not seen any sick fish.last two outings was just a perch away from a grand slam. We have caught some nice pike as well they are hitting big bait no problems. There is a report on the lake coming out in the spring.

Star Star Star Star Star

I think this lake is doomed!! I decided to hit multiple areas to see if there was any better than the next. The answer is no, the fish are tiny and starving. Just outside of the big bay from the boat launch off the eastern weed bed produces nice size pike and my biggest walleye out of Wab (11lbs) in 12-14' water

22 is my best. Guy I work with pulled a 34 pounder out at seba beach 2 years back.

And just last year me and my good friend where fishing and he had a big one we saw it under the ice it was around 20 pounds. But once he ran with it the line snapped.

Fishdoc, dont get mesmorized by the cam like most. I seen guys sit n stare at their camera all day and get nothin!! Use it as a tool to map structure and document behavior. Once i found my spot/tech. I watched n watched and documented times etc when the whites and pike showed up. Once you get a time frame focus on what they will attack.

Yes CaptainJack it is very helpful having a camera. U can look at structure and how they are reacting to your bait etc. When i found my spot i drew out a oattern of my holes with notes on structure and depths. Its not a fluke to find a sweet spot. After i compared my map/notes to a topo map to pinpoint a likely spot for fish to funnel to. Once i found the whites i began to study how they reacted to diff baits and techniques, time if yr etc. I have it down to an art and always pull over 20 fish each trip. My best day was 25ish fish but the smallest was 6lbs and biggest 25lb 4oz. 4 over 20lbs. I have yrs invested in my spot and watching the camera. Diff times of the day also have an effect on their willingness to bite. Cloudy or bright days too. If ya think u can just drop a smelt down n think walla they will bite you're fooling yourself. Good point on the water clarity, this is also a factor . Many people think that pike that aggressively bite over n over because they are starving are dead wrong. In actuality the aggressive fish are very well fed and instictively eat and eat to build mass and fat. A starving fish will lay low and reserve its energy, this is a trick that mature trophy pike learn . Pre and post spawn trophy pike will eat and eat and eat. Pre spawn more and this is what makes march so good for large hens.
