Good morning, does anyone know what the ice situation is on chain-lakes? It's been a long winter and I'm itching to get out for some shore fishing.

by iFish Guest on Jan. 13, 2021
Actually the lake was stocked with close to 130 thou fish in summer and fall. But probably not very big. No time to grow. People should put small fish back. Dunno if that is the problem or just too many people fishing for amount of fish stocked.

by Gordf on Jan. 9, 2021
I don’t think they have stocked this lake in a while......with all the people that fish here and nobody catching anything worth while....just sayin 🤷♂️

by Gordf on Jan. 9, 2021
I think they haven
by Bert&Carina on Jan. 8, 2021
Went out yesterday at 09:30 and stayed until 13:30. The weather was amazing with sunshine and no wind! The ice was approximately 14 inches thick. Probably 30 different groups on the ice today; tracks all over but only one vehicle on the ice. Cut 10 holes during this time starting at a 18 foot depth and ending at about 12 foot depth. One small movement the entire time! No real bites and nothing catchable! To me heavily fished with holes everywhere. This was a fun place to fish, especially ice fish, and has slowed considerably over these last years but since COVID it’s sure not the Lake it used to be ... too bad.

by Mykul on Dec. 17, 2020
9 inches of ice. 90 percent polished ice, bring cleats! Couple nibbles today no bites.

by Mikepp on Dec. 9, 2020
Anyone fishing today? Did it snow there?

by Mikepp on Nov. 23, 2020
Checked ice few days ago. About 3 to 4 inches. I stayed within 50 ft of shore. Did some fishing but no luck.

by Mikepp on Nov. 18, 2020
Ice doesn't quite look safe, maybe close to shore ok. Wait at least another week or two. Or enter at own risk.

by dougox24 on Nov. 17, 2020
What is the ice like November 17 2020

by Saint on Sep. 19, 2020
Has anyone fished here since july 15 ?

by Madfisherman89 on Jul. 14, 2020
Yes i was trolling with my daughter and nease for most of the afternoon

by Papacat1965 on Jul. 13, 2020
@ madfisherman89. Were you trolling in a boat?

by Madfisherman89 on Jul. 13, 2020
Always love it here was there july 12 and caught a bunch of rainbows best place to take the kids

by JessieB on Jul. 8, 2020
Ok fisherman, you're giving the rest of us a bad name. If you're fishing off the north east side of the lake off highway 22, please don't leave your garbage for others to pick up. What a disgrace. For anyone that's left garbage down there, shame on you!

by Papacat1965 on Jul. 3, 2020
Fished from 530 am to 1130 am. Not one bite. Tried numerous spots and baits/ tackle. No one else was getting any action either. Going to be a lousy year by the looks of it.
by 43yroldrookieangler on Jun. 27, 2020
We were at the far north end of the lake yesterday. Fished at the shore from 12-2pm. Not much happening. No real jumpers. No bites. Landed nothing.

by Bert on Jun. 13, 2020
Was out at Chain Lakes on June 11 arriving at 08:00. The fishing was okay with me catching 4 surprisingly aggressive Suckers and my wife catching 3 Trout and 1 Sucker; two of the Trout were nice sized sleek and clean. Not surprising with COVID that there were a lot of people fishing from shore and quite a lot of boats, kayaks, and water activity.

by foothillzman on May. 28, 2020
There last night with my daughter. Weird, visibility was less than 12%u201D, no bites in the last 2 hes before dark. Does willow creek runoff come into the lake?

by CharlesN on May. 15, 2020
Not a bite for me and saw no one else reeling in anything from sun up to noon at the park. Wind was up on the north side. Too choppy.

by Dumb welder on May. 13, 2020
I was there today you can drive in. There was lots of gophers and deer we never caught any fish. It looked like even the bathrooms were open but I did use them.

by calgary15 on May. 13, 2020
Ttran2 Provincial parks now open

by Ttran2 on May. 13, 2020
Thanks Mikepp, do you know if we can drive into the park or have to park our car somewhere then walk in?
by Mikepp on May. 12, 2020
Ice gone. People fishing from shore. Launches ready. Stocking was due May 6th. Hopefully was done.

by Ttran2 on May. 12, 2020
anyone know if park is open and how is the ice on the lake?

by CharlesN on Apr. 29, 2020
Took a day off April 24th to see if the lake was open. Park is closed and the road into the park is blocked at the park office. Lake is still 95% frozen on the surface. Prob be another month before it’s fishable

by NBK213 on Apr. 28, 2020
Is the lake open for fishing or is it closed until the pandemic is over?
by Okotokian on Mar. 27, 2020
March 27. North end of lake. 22 inches of ice. Caught one whitefish. Couple of bites. Numerous fish on the fishfinder but couldn’t get them to take. Still, nice day.

by Okotokian on Mar. 27, 2020

by Chimbamex on Feb. 15, 2020
Heading there today again, even that we didn't had any bite 2 weeks ago. We try 3 different Gulps, corn, cheese

by Fisher-Queens on Feb. 9, 2020
Can we drive a truck and small trailer on Chain Lakes to spend the night?

by Madfisherman89 on Feb. 9, 2020
That's only half the problem with chain the other half is due to the warm weather all the freshwater shrimp have hatched early and the trout are feeding on them so even the few large ones that are left are full and wont bite a lure

by dr fisher on Feb. 2, 2020
The reason for slow fishing this winter is a result of the 54000 fish added in October were only 5.1 cm or 2 inch fish!! most of the earlier ones were +/- 10 cm and only 3500 stocked in mid summer were 20 cm. 5 cm fish don't bit on lures etc!! See the stocking report issues Oct 21 2019.

by Altafishingguy on Jan. 29, 2020
Was out there on Jan 25th. not a single hit. Go figure! Ice thickness exceeds 20"

by JT1 on Dec. 26, 2019
Can someone please update how thick the ice is? Are people driving on the lake yet?

by Mikepp on Dec. 26, 2019
Was out on Tue 24 Dec. out from west boat launch caught 4 good sized rainbows. Catch and release. Good sign that the fish are getting hungry again. Last hour was quiet though.
by SeanPittman on Dec. 22, 2019
Went out for 4 hours today. Ice is 11" straight out from the boat launch with an inch of slush in areas. We caught a nice rainbow within the first couple of minutes but it was very slow after that. A few bites but not landed. There is a lot of snow built up at the boat launch but the parking lot is easily accessible.

by Grod40 on Dec. 15, 2019
Was out today. 5 good inches of ice at south end but there was at least a foot of slush/water on top of the ice. Made for a mess in the tent and walking off. Is this caused by the weight of the snow on the ice? Fishing was slow, 2 small trout and 6 suckers.

by nickmal47 on Dec. 14, 2019
Went out yesterday to south end by boat launch... 5-6 inches of solid black ice and about 2-3 inches of crumbly/ brittle ice on top of that!

by El Diablo on Dec. 13, 2019
Grod40. Ice was fine last weekend for walking anywhere

by Grod40 on Dec. 13, 2019
With this past week being cold could anyone going out today please update ice thickness at south end? Would like to head out Sunday with kids but want to ensure it will be safe to walk out.

To many people go here ice fishing and always gotta be beside ya..when there's a huge lake to go

by Mikepp on Dec. 11, 2019
They stocked 50 thou in Sep. Gotta be fish in there, though nothing on my sonar.

by iFish Guest on Dec. 8, 2019
8-9 inches at North end off the dam.

by foothillzman on Dec. 6, 2019
i noticed they stocked it in sept instead of october, I am curious if that means not as many fish left for the ice season. with october stockings i notice icefishing is great dec-jan amd then slows down

by J-hook on Dec. 5, 2019
Was there Dec.1, 2019. Ice was slushy and wet. Manage to catch one on a wire worm. I saw a couple of fish on my flasher. Not much activity. Starting to doubt that stocking was done.
by Mikepp on Dec. 2, 2019

by Fish for life on Sep. 16, 2019
Was out last Sunday September 8th. Caught two about 12 inches on shrimp. There were a couple of other guys there who caught a 3 or 4 on shrimp as well. They are there but sometimes they just stop taking anything.

by foothillzman on Sep. 15, 2019
Was out with my daughter for a few hours today. We never caught any fish, and neither did the other 10 folks we saw. I think it needs another stocking, none since May/June according to the reports...

by Cory123 on Jul. 18, 2019

by foothillzman on Jun. 16, 2019
Got out for an hour Saturday with my daughter shore fishing and we caught a nice 13%u201D rainbow We caught the only one we saw in the hour. About 30 other people on the shore fishing. People next to our campsite caught one from their boat too.

by Bert&Carina on Mar. 23, 2019
Went out to Chain on Thursday March 21st. It was a beautiful almost no wind day! Ice was still 24 inches thick but with the sunshine the shoreline area was starting to melt with the first few inches really mushy and wet. We started at 11:00 and the fishing was steady until we left at 16:00 but mostly Suckers on the line. We managed to hook 4 trout, two of which were an okay size; all released.

Hi Bert, Last Sunday I was at Chain Lakes fishing with a rod holder & tip-up by Black Fox Fishing. The wind gusts were exceeding 100 km. I landed many fish using the Trigger. I was totally impressed. You can buy them at the Canadian Tire store in Cochrane, AB Check it out: www.blackfoxfishing.com

by Bert on Jan. 9, 2019
Went out on Saturday, January 5th, in the late morning. The weather was great and the ice surface packed with numerous fishermen/women. Unfortunately the fishing was super slow. We stayed three hours and during that time saw someone catch a small Sucker and we pulled up a small Rainbow. Great weather with low winds but bad fishing. As an aside ... A gentleman with a fish camera shared that there were a ton of fish below the ice and many approaching the bait but none actively biting. Conservation Officers were out as well checking everyone for licenses and rigs. Hopefully better fishing opportunities lay ahead ...

by RavishishRickRude on Jan. 3, 2019
Went out to Chain today. 10

Hi Corkdown! I'm no expert but I have ice fished at Chain many times. Typically I walk on from the north side parking lot at the campground. I walk no more then 50 to 60 feet out and fish in 12 - 15 feet of water. Always had some success catching Rainbows! Good luck!

by Corkdown on Dec. 28, 2018
Looking for a little advice for a couple Minnesotans. My kid looking to ice fish again since moving here last year. Are trout deep? Only really fished crappies and walleyes. Thanks

by iFish Guest on Dec. 14, 2018
Earlier this year I caught 30 rainbows... the largest were only 14-15 inches. It’s an awesome stocked lake but I hope that there can be a length limit of 30cm added so there is isnt 6-10in fish being kept which will create larger fish overall

by Bert&Carina on Nov. 13, 2018
Ice Report: 2 in
Ice approximately 2 inches at 20-30 feet off shoreline ... still some open water across lake. Not safe if you venture to far from the lower depths.

by Bert&Carina on Nov. 13, 2018
Call me crazy but drove out to Chain today hoping for one last day of fishing. Having read some of the comments here I brought my ice auger along. Ventured onto the ice carefully as I could see evidence of activity (holes in the ice) upwards of thirty feet off the shore. Drilled a few of my own finding that the ice was fairly consistent and approximately 2%u201D. The wind was gusting and melting the surface a bit and making the ice super slippery. There was a small section of open water across the lake from the launch. My guess is that there will be safe ice (to walk upon) and fishing by the end of November!

by Altafishingguy on Nov. 13, 2018
I was out there at 12:00 noon. No one was on the ice when I arrived. Are you sure your were at Chain Lakes and drilled a couple of holes????? With a hand drill? Much to dangerous to venture out on the ice. I threw a few boulders to check the thickness,

by JaroslawJan on Nov. 13, 2018

Monday October 29th we were at Chain shore fishing on the North end. It was a windy day making conditions cold and miserable. Toughed it out and had success catching and releasing 10 nice Rainbows, the largest of which was a beauty at 3 pounds. Bodes well for the upcoming ice fishing season!

by Fish for life on Oct. 19, 2018
Was there Oct 18th, fishing from shore was good. There were a lot of people fishing from shore and doing well. There were 3 older gentleman who did very well, catching them on shrimp. Worms and Power bait did well also. I was there from 2:00 pm until 6 pm._kept 3 and released about 6. There were some that I saw that were about 14 - 15 inches. Very nice fish. I just wanted to keep 3 to take home and bbq. If it's still nice for a while, I will be going out again. Good time.

Chain Lakes is always a fun place to Ice Fish! Today, April 20th, the weather was fantastic, sunny and little wind! Caught a ton of little trout that wouldn't stay off of our hooks! Things are melting and the ice is still thick at 18-20". The shoreline ice is mushy and with the warmer days you are going to need rubber boots to slosh thru the mess. This will be our last Ice Fishing adventure for this Season ...

by Bert&Carina on Apr. 11, 2018
Ice fishing yesterday (April 10th) with the thickness still around 20" with packed snow cover. Finally nice weather and the wind bareable ... Good day fishing with lots of bites, caught 12 fish with 2 keeper Rainbows. Still quite a few people out fishing!

by mapman_yyc on Apr. 7, 2018
Out today from 9-3. C&R 2 little drink trout. Ice still over 15 inches thick and good hard ice just north of day use with 3-5 inches of snow on top. Ice 15-20 inches thick but softer on west side. Most people drove out.

by fishin'buddy on Apr. 2, 2018

by eric_ryan88 on Mar. 21, 2018
Velvetta cheese on #8 hook with a split shot a couple inches away from your hook. Have fun landing fish

by Newfie123 on Mar. 20, 2018

by Captain Dmac on Mar. 20, 2018
How do all you guys catch fish on this lake? The last 3 times I have been there all I get is nibbles but I can't seem to land a single fish. I must be doing something wrong.

by fishin'buddy on Mar. 19, 2018
i spent 5 hours at Chain today and had a great time catching 10 rainbows a couple of nice keepers, but they went back in to grow even larger. ice was about 22 inches with a couple of inches of snow on top, no water on top today.

by Copsarehere on Mar. 18, 2018
Went out yesterday on north end ice was 22" with about 6" of water on top between 3 of us we caught 26 rainbows in 7 hours one being good sized. Your odds of catching a good sized rainbow is the same as winning on the roll up the rim.

by Marty2 on Mar. 14, 2018
How thick is the ice? Are people still driving on it.

by Shern on Mar. 13, 2018
Beautiful blue sky sunny day, but no bites in 2 hours. Ice snow covered.

Monsterlander - I think you're right. I double checked after I posted and they look like suckers. Still fun to catch but I won't try eating.

by Monsterlander on Mar. 12, 2018
Are you sure there whitefish and not suckers ? I haven't heard of whitefish being caught out of here. But I've heard there are tons of suckers. I dunno I haven't fished chain in years.

by AllanD on Mar. 12, 2018
Lots of rainbow, lots of whitefish. Took a larger rainbow home for dinner. Anyone tried a whitefish from here or are they pretty muddy?

by cClarence on Mar. 10, 2018
Checking barbs? C'mon man. They haven't done this since like 2010. The law was never actually properly passed and anyone who had ever received a ticket could get reimbursed.

by Copsarehere on Mar. 7, 2018

by Chimbamex on Feb. 10, 2018
Ice 80cm thick, snow 20cm also, not much people. Great day 7 rainbow keepers Conservation Officers always around, that's good to me, checking licence, barbs, quantities.

We went in the later morning yesterday and it was sunny but a bit windy. Lots of smaller Trout and lucky to get 3 keepers ... between the 6 Suckers we caught. Best part of the day was watching the beautiful Eagles soar over the lake and land close by! All in all a good day!

Chain Lakes was first stocked in 1967. By 1970 suckers became dominant. In 1978 test netting caught 84% suckers. In 1979 test netting caught 93% suckers. In 2007 they stocked Chain Lakes with Bull Trout. They don't stock Bull Trout for harvest, they put them in lakes that need help with the sucker population. They used the same tactic at Upper Kananaskis lake. I can't speak for anyone. However based on the history of this lake, and the extra effort that has been put in to control suckers, it appears as though killing suckers might help keep Chain Lakes a good lake to fish in year after year. The information that i have shared is from the Atlas of Alberta Lakes by Patricia Mitchell and Ellie Prepas.

by Fishtracker on Feb. 9, 2017
When the cougars show up one day for an easy meal, maybe people will think twice about leaving them to rot! lol...

by Zeus87 on Feb. 9, 2017
I find it hard to believe that fish and wildlife would ever tell you to kill an animal that isn't an invasive species. Their whole job is to protect the fish so if an officer actually told you that he should be ashamed. If the suckers hurt the lake they would put up signs everywhere informing people to remove them. In the end it's not illegal to remove them so everyone is allowed to do as they wish but I wasn't raised that way so I'll be releasing them until the law says otherwise. Happy fishing everyone

by Nviro on Feb. 6, 2017
There's no reason to waste the suckers. Put them back, they're naturally occurring and a healthy lake has diversity of species. Plus the lake is stocked so it's not like the recruitment is affected much by suckers eating eggs or fry. That's backwards old school thinking. Plus they're fun to catch.

by Safhlhockey on Feb. 5, 2017

by Tego on Feb. 1, 2017
Zeus87 i went there last Sunday afternoon and had no luck . were you fishing in the afternoon or morning ?

by Tego on Feb. 1, 2017
Zeus87 not sure what's wrong with some people they don't realize that if they don't take their garbage they would be hurting the fisheries and wildlife also contaminating the fish that they are eating , what also p***** me off is smokers who throw out their cigarette butts on ice or water , come on people take your garbage with you . i was out fishing in September at a different place and there was bird caught in a fishing line left on the shore was able to untangle it , unbelievable .

by Zeus87 on Feb. 1, 2017
Was out yesterday on the west side and although the fishing was good I've never been so angry about what I saw on the ice. Someone had left empty propane cans and several other pieces of garbage all over the ice which has now frozen itself in. How hard is it to clean up your garbage people. I also noticed they had thrown about 8-10 suckerfish on the ice to die. They aren't a sport fish so technically you can keep them but why just kill them doesn't make any sense to me. I caught 2 myself and found they were the best fight of the day so I always release them. All in all the fishing was good and the weather was nice just wish people weren't so inconsiderate out on the ice.

Bull corn 🌽 on fishing barbless on rivers. Nothing in the regulations about it.

by Marley on Jan. 8, 2017
Hey Gary, good to see you on this site as well. Thanks for the power bait, unfortunately it was unsucccesful for me and I do appreciate all the advice. I went back out today and had 2 immediate bites @ 1:30. On the 2nd bite, the fish and wildlife officer just happened to be there as I lost the fish. I did ask him direct " barbed or barbless"? He told me that I could use barbed hooks, but barbless is recommended. I did put a barbed hook on and it is all legal. He did say river fishing is barbless. None the less, I never got a bite after that, lol, and I did stay till 5:00pm. I will be going out again tomorrow, so perhaps I will run into you out there again Gary. As to the feedback as to why people still think you need to be barbless, the law was changed in 2011 to barbed hooks and the officer today said it is in the works once again to being changed to barbless. When that happens, no one knows as of yet. The laws here in Alberta seem to change quite frequent, so doesn't hurt to be on the safe side and ask questions. Thanks again Gary.
by Bemoredog on Jan. 8, 2017
don't need to use barbless hooks. not sure why folks still believe this is the regulation.
by Gary fishing on Jan. 8, 2017
I was just looking in the regs and can't find anything saying barbed hooks are not allowed, but my wild Alberta is asking anglers to use barbless hooks. I will need to look further. But I use barbless hooks at all times, easier on fish you release back into the water

by Gary fishing on Jan. 8, 2017

Fished here on July 3 We caught 40 Fish in 5 hours We're trolling spoons. Best day I've had here. All in 6-8 inch range.

by fiveinthesand on Jul. 3, 2016
Had a great day trolling a line out the back of my kayak using nothing more than a white plastic whirly tail. Using a size 10 hook was good. Had to check every couple of strokes for what might feel like a little extra weight on the line as the little rainbows were barely big enough to make my medium action rod twitch. You really felt it when the bigger ones hit though! Great day! Great Lake!

Can anyone tell me if you can launch a 17 foot boat or is the water level still to low?

by rainbow treat on Jun. 27, 2016
Great day fishing yesterday, these rainbows will give you a good fight unlike walleyes at pine coulee which is too easy it's almost boring to fish.

by AlbertakidFishing on Jun. 3, 2016
Me and my dad wanna come out this sunday and we wanna know if its okay shore fishing ? we fish a lot so were good with rod set up but is the fishing good rn?
by Mikepp on Jun. 2, 2016
Boats can be launched just left of the West pad. It's gravel but works. Looks like it's only place to launch so good idea get your boat in and out without delay. Good fishing!!!

by sonny b on May. 19, 2016
I was able to launch my 15 foot glass no problems. Steep yes but also watched a guy in a rear wheel drive motor home launch his aluminum with little trouble as well. Keep your party barge at home for at least a few weeks though .

by goosehunter2416@yahoo.ca on May. 15, 2016
Very steep ramp with loose gravel, not worth the chance in my opinion, save yourself the drive unless you are fishing from shore.

by goosehunter2416@yahoo.ca on May. 15, 2016
Drove there yesterday from Calgary, water level very low,you can probably get your boat in but if you don't have a 4 wheel you may not get it out.

How is the water level ? Can you launch at the boat from the launch ?.. Was there about a month ago and the water was sooo low by the snack shack . I didn't see anyone trailer launch . Looked like you would get stuck in the mud for sure. Hopeing the rain brought it up . I never seen it that low :(

by Big_Ballers on May. 9, 2016
I have always had good luck on a fly rod here. There not big fish so recomend a 3wt rod. A 5wt works but you will feel more hits with a 3wt. Use stone fly, copper johns & evil weevils size 12 to 18 works for me.

by EthanAW on Apr. 25, 2016
Has anyone tried the north dam, how's the access and fishing there?

by Mad angler on Apr. 23, 2016
Low level of water at Chain Lake today but still nice fishing day. Lots of bite and landed mostly 8 inches rainbows. There are lots of small trout dead around 3-5 inches along the shore what a waste.

by Nviro on Apr. 23, 2016
What I don't get is how people can't connect the dots that by not reporting people poaching that fewer people get caught so there's more poaching and fewer fish to catch. I'll take being a Rat over being part of the problem every day.

by showyouhowitsdone on Apr. 23, 2016
Appreciate the support Capt. , good to know there is still some solid people left out there who do get it.__keep on fishin'__

by CaptSumTingWong on Apr. 23, 2016
Caught a few by the provincial park, north side parking lot. showyou: I agree with you 100%. Here is why: My good friend is a Conservation officer, and he told me that it is true, most tickets he gives out are for people who are originally from communist countries. No idea why, but it is the truth. So, all of you crybabies like troutman can go cry to your daddy Justine Trudip. The truth always hurts whiny people like NDP and Libtard supporters.

by showyouhowitsdone on Apr. 23, 2016
I cannot agree with that. I was born and raised in Canada, no immigration here. maybe my family did years ago. but that's the past don't dwell on it __Have some respect for Canada and learn the language of our nation, don't bring your ways from overseas over here cause it obviously did not work where you came from , so don't bring it here. I will continue to point fingers and call you out. I definitely wont call the ranger as I am not a little rat.__I Just ask people show some respect for Canada and our beautiful wildlife? Is that to much to ask?

by Troutman123 on Apr. 22, 2016
Stop point fingers at people who don't. Speak English or whatever language they are speaking. Call the Ranger if you see any violation. I do that all the time n I don't care if they speak English or any other language! Don't try to imply all people who don't speak English are violators.Unless you are a First Nation, other than that,we r all immigrants.

by AlbertakidFishing on Apr. 18, 2016
Hey everybody for helping, i do think we should not keep fishing under 7 inches. but what is good to use down there to catch fish ?
by Anigh89 on Apr. 17, 2016
Lots of people here today. Shore was lined with people. We caught three in an hour so at the south end. They were hitting pretty much everywhere though.

by MrFishMaster on Apr. 17, 2016
These tiny little stocked trout are there for people to fish and keep if they want to. The fisheries encourage it so people don't take fish from the wild. Otherwise they would have a size restriction .your fish license pays for it.these catch and release fish with live bait usually die after a couple of times anyways. So dumb, judgemental, discriminate people can go to hell. You know who you are.your dumb in life and full of hate.

by Peter Ron on Apr. 15, 2016
Hi guys. Is the water up yet.
by NorthernYaker on Apr. 14, 2016
@ showu, you'd get a ignorant response from me to if I was fishing within the law and you opened your mouth about it, not that I keep tiny trout, but I'm sure you get the point. These fish are stocked , it's aput and take Lake.

by showyouhowitsdone on Apr. 14, 2016
To albertakidfishing, There is good shore fishing, get there early though as the shoreline is usually pretty full of people.__on another note, please throw back smaller trout as I was there last weekend and the fishermen who don't speak English very well were keeping anything they could get there hands on I saw one kept as small as 5 inches. I had to remind him as usual to stop doing that., and as usual all I got was a ignorant response. __Have fun and good luck

by jblack@live.ca on Apr. 11, 2016
Anobody been out with a boat yet? hows the levels?

by Nviro on Apr. 10, 2016
Put and take lakes are there for people who want to catch lots of fish and sometimes keep them too. Go to some of the quality catch and release trout fisheries when they open after the spawn if you want bigger fish to catch. If they're keeping over limits report them, if not leave them alone to enjoy fishing regardless of their first language. Share the fishery and keep comments that suggest discrimination off of a public site.

by CodySchaber on Apr. 10, 2016
I really like coming here when it's not to windy, the only thing is, always only catch small guys, and ALWAYS notice people keeping every little fish. When I was out on the ice the people next to me were keeping like 6 inch fish and a ton of them, just like when I was out yesterday the people next to us were keeping every little fish they caught. I made a point to say something to them but go figure, not a word of English spoken. But other than that lots of action just to bad they are all so small

I've never been skunked ice fishing here. It's definitely a popular spot. Usually fish in 12-15' but shallower works too. I've been told Bulls can be found in here but haven't seen one yet. The odd sucker too. Play with the depth of your lure if fishing gets slow.

Caught our limit today and through a few small ones back. I seen a few large trucks and a SUV on the ice. Not a good idea it's 15 inches for small vehicle, such as cars and mini Vans. It's 20 inches for your basic 4x4 truck, Be smart not lazy, just think of what that would do to the lake if a truck went through and how that would ruin our family fishing hole.

Hi Timber, somehow I can' see the rest of your post but in case it was about the two lines I had the spinning first but didn't seem to work, so I switched to the fly (after a good while undoing an entangled tipped in the reel). To be honest, I think that when I made it back to the dock I made the mistake of leaving the two lines in the water as I was trying to get the kayak parallel to the dock as opposed to running the bow onto the beach. I will make sure to have only one line in the water at all times! Thanks for the reminder if that was the topic, much appreciated.

by TimberSmith on Jul. 21, 2015
FYI Kesh: I could be wrong

by Kesh on Jul. 21, 2015
I was at Chain Lakes on Sunday July 19, testing my sit on top fishing kayak for the first time. It was also a family trip so I didn't spend more than 2 hours or so on the water. While on the water I was more "testing" than actually fishing but I was trolling with two rods. One was a simple spinning with a slip bobber and a bright jig, running at about 2 to 3 meters deep. The other was a fly rod with a 5wf floating line and about ten feet of tapered leader and a somewhat heavy bug (looks like a wasp, black body with yellow spots). The bug was running under the surface, not more than a feet or two. A small rainbow (9 inches I think) liked the bug, that was my only catch of the day. I'm pretty sure I saw fish on the finder, middle of the water column or close to the bottom. I was using a lowrance 4x elite in down scan mode, it gave me very, very clear images of bottom, weeds, etc. I was in all that area in front of the dock that is closer to the south dam. I was trolling parallel to the weeds areas, along the edge of the weeds. I also had a couple bites on the jig (spinning rod) but I think I was busy talking on the radio to kids and wife, so missed that. I know the bites were good because I had the spinning rod in one hand when it happened. Anyways, very nice place for fishing. Lots of people and still very organized and friendly. There is parking space for cars and trailers (had my kayak on a trailer instead of the roof). The dock area is easy for the kayaks (there were a few other kayaks too). I will go again and then try changing presentations (I wanted to change the jig for a bug or leech) and actually paying more attention to fishing!!

A ton of water on top of the ice. All the water made it hard to enjoy you can't even set anything down for a second. Guess what can you expect with such warm weather. Ice is 12-15inches thick tho so still plenty safe. Fish were not really biting. Only time I've ever gone and not caught fish. Hopefully we get some cold weather and a nice dusting of snow to freez up the top and make it nice to walk and fish on.

by NC on Nov. 16, 2014
Hey guys, just thought that I would let everyone know that chain has 4 - 4.5 inches of ice as of today (November 16th) action came in waves, I'm thinking as a school would travel by. BUT I will say something that honestly made me a little scared for the future of the lake. When I was gutting the one decent size rainbow that I kept, I did it the normal way, up the belly starting at the anus stopping just before the gills and then cutting the head halfway down from the top so that the guts would come out with the head. NOW what concerned me, when all of the guts were out ( and I mean EVERY last bit of guts ) there was a large growth (around the size the stomach should be) stuck to the inside of the ribs, even after I pulled all the guts out it was still attached by a thin string that seemed to be connecting the vein to the growth, it was really light pretty much skin colored with one really dark red spot and one vein through the middle and lots branching off the vein in the middle. I think it was very possibly a cancerous tumor. And also the meat was DARK red, almost purple, looked almost exactly like an Ahi Tuna steak should look. When I iced the fish ( it was around 12in long) it had a small skin colored worm crawling on the outside of the skin as well, but since this worm came off no problem at all I thought the fish would be ok. Also no visible scars on the outside of the fish, so it couldn't have been scar tissue that did that. If someone could tell me what this is I would GREATLY appreciate it as I did not bring the fish or the tumor to the fish and wildlife officer that is stationed there. I just threw it in the garbage as I did not want to take any chances by eating it.

Had a great day on August 31st. Tolled a little No.7 5 of Diamonds and caught 11 in about 4 hours. Lost a bunch too. We think the key was our troll speed was much faster than anyone else on the lake.

Just got back from Chain Lakes. Ice is 11-12" of good clear ice. Therw were about a dozen other people fishing. The ice is in good shape.Fishing was a little slow with two fish in one hour.

by That guy on Dec. 9, 2012
Went yesterday 6" of ice. No bites though.

by Perchman on Dec. 7, 2012
Lol, " 4 inchs of ice min" that makes me laugh. A team of horses maybe. 7" of ice will hold 3 tons but always drill a hole near the load. If water comes up , it won't hold a stationary load because of the bowl effect. Vehicles can break through a foot of ice if left for extended period of time .

by That guy on Dec. 7, 2012
Any update on the ice thickness?

by Fishing King2012 on Dec. 2, 2012
And how is the ice at Chain? is the is getting thicker?

by SirFreddyFarter on Dec. 1, 2012
4inches is the minimum for a person to go on the ice

by Fishing King2012 on Dec. 1, 2012
Does anyone know who i can call for an ice update? because i was thinking of nexted weekend for ice fishing there. Or if anyone can tell me the thickness? Is 4 inchs plenty of ice to hold a person up?

by Lure on Nov. 28, 2012

by Steve on Jun. 8, 2012
The dock is not in the water yet! Water was murky but managed 25 trout to the boat and lost 10 more! All the fish were caught on a small sinking rainbow trout rapala while trolling!

by LittleB on Jun. 3, 2012
The water is really low right now so the boat launch is pretty treacherous. But once we got the boat in the water, the fishing was awesome. All over the lake.

by Pat on May. 26, 2012
Does anyone know why the water is still so low, usually the dock is out before the long weekend but the water is way too low

by Hill on May. 23, 2012

by Perks on Jan. 1, 2011
Fishing year round is here is good... Summer had most success with small meps and spinners, winter ice fishing velveta cheese on small hooks is the ticket!
