Just pulled my shack off the lake last weekend after 90 days of fishing. We only had 3 days with no fish so anybody who says this lake is dead needs to give their head a shake. Lots of pike, walleye and perch were caught. I have been fishing this lake for almost 20 years and will keep coming back.

I don't know which is the best, but the one bordering Killdeer Beach Resort is pretty much high and dry. I sure wouldn't recommend it.
by Madarcher999 on Aug. 27, 2016
Which launch is the main and/or best launch for this lake?
by Kinalberta on Aug. 15, 2016
I can't find the data/link on alms.ca but the watershed group produced a handbook showing the levels for a few decades. A very interesting graph is on page 4.
In hindsight it was relatively stable up until about 1999 then dropped in a near straight line by over a metre (may 3.3m or about 4') by 2002 from what any average would have shown.
Without the data, I'm guessing it's only recovered maybe 1/3 to 1/2 of that drop in water levels.
by Curtis_rak on Aug. 11, 2016
Alms.ca has all the historical data for the lake. And other lakes in the area. Water levels fluctuate yearly. But over decades there is a decrease....
by Kinalberta on Aug. 9, 2016
Highest ever? Far from it. Next to Kildeer Beach resort is a marker showing the 1947? Low and the 1998 high. I bet the water is still below the' 47 low.
We have a property on the lake and in all my life I've never seen such an extended period of low water. It's still 40'-50' feet away from what I saw as normal for the last 50+ years.
by NorthernYaker on Aug. 8, 2016
No but seriously according to people living at the lake 2014 was the highest they had ever seen the lake....
by Kinalberta on Aug. 7, 2016
Does anyone know why the water levels have stayed down in the lake. They're well below the previous 1947 low and have been for a decade now.

Anyone know where I can catch whites or burbot here. Headed that way this week.
by Curtis_rak on Jul. 27, 2016
Couldn't find the walleye. But lots of pike caught around the sunken islands. Contrary to the last post, the main launch was fine (20' boat/tandem trailer). The blue/green algae bloom was heaviest around the islands and approx 400m diameter. The rest of the lake was fine. The water on the west side was great.... Everybody just calm down....

Hey all, fished here this weekend for the first time in 20 years. Grew up fishing on this lake and it did not disappoint! The lake is pretty knarley (like most Alberta lakes unfortunately) lots of suspended algae in the water. I hit the lake with my kayak trolled along the weeds with rattle traps, anchored down and threw some Texas rigged soft baits into the reeds and cast some buck tails ripping them through the milfoil all techniques proved successful against some decent sized pike. -YakAngler1

Early ice. Ice before it can fully turn over and saturate with O2. Coupled with excess dead biomass (weeds, algae, sewage etc.)
by Ricky bobby on Feb. 22, 2015
So sad I was doing really good there this year. And now this happens. I wonder how it happens to such a deep lake
by Speye on Feb. 22, 2015
Fished all weekend. Seen a bunch of dead fish on bottom and seen a load of fish swimming just under the ice. Jack, whitefish, walleye, a perch and sucker fish all swimming around together very lethargic and uninterested.
by ForceRecon on Feb. 21, 2015
Been out a few hours, just in front of my house, drilled about 10 holes at different depths. Bottom littered with dead minnows. No live fish at all on camera. Talked to an older couple said they tested the water, no O2 below about 4 meters. Lake might be dead.
by fishing1199 on Feb. 19, 2015
I was out at the island fishing today and did not see a fish. I found out from other fishing guys that this lake has been very slow. Talked with 3 other guys and they said the same. Maybe things could change in a month.

by Firemanespo on Feb. 10, 2015
Saw all five species on camera, all swimming in upper water column under the ice-even a burbot. Nothing bit, not good news I think! Government should pump in some o2. Be a shame to winter kill.
by KingFisherLuey on Feb. 9, 2015
Might be lacking O2. I seen a few jack and one Eye crusing just below my hole, back skimming the ice. Nothing in the depths. No hook ups.

Fishermans cove from noon-3pm. No bites. Good ice, 10inches. My neighbor and his friend took their sleds around the perimeter of the lake and said the only bad ice was by willow bend resort. I also seen a truck on the ice and someone has a ice fishing shack on. So I would say the ice is safe, but I wouldn't drive to far from the shore.

Any pointers for a guy that loves fishing but new to fresh water fishing ?
by Speye on Sep. 25, 2013
7 hrs and skunked for my first time on this lake. Only 3 bites but still better than a day at work. I love this lake.
by Speye on Aug. 27, 2013
I agree. I was just out on the long weekend. Between the 3 of us we caught 20 pike and 5 walleye, and this is all mid afternoon. Lots of fish in this lake. Some nights I fish from the neihbours dock and still manage a few pike. Nothing wrong with this lake, it's a lot fun.
by Cajed1 on Aug. 26, 2013
The fishing at this lake has been awesome all year from ice off to present. What do you mean fish come back??ive caught hundreds of walleye and pike this yea. Never been skunked
by iFish Guest on Aug. 25, 2013
Went there on May 13 and 14. Nothing, not even a bite. Was fishing from the dock. I really hope the fish come back to this lake. It's a nice area.
by Cajed1 on Aug. 7, 2013
Why would anyone want to keep a walleye from a lake that has had blue moldy scum floating in large sections of the lake for almost a month now. Location of blue moldy surface scum depends on winds. Been seeing more and more dead whitefish the last couple weeks as well. Fishing is still decent. Definitely wouldn't eat anything coming out of here ever.
by Fishon! on Aug. 6, 2013
Caught three perch in the winter time on tipups. Been trying to hit em in the summer with no luck. All 3 over 11"

by Cajed1 on Jun. 20, 2013
Where are you fishing on the lake?? Weeds aren't as bad as last year yet. I'm out there 4-5 times most weeks and this a great and very productive lake. Try using floating cranks in water less than 14ft and you should be fine. Also a fish finder really helps to locate the narrow weedy spots & gives you chance to pull up your lure for the required 30seconds or so till you pass over them.
by iFish Guest on Jun. 20, 2013
out today, two small walleye 52cm and a small jack 58cm. nothing to keep, alot of weeds this year, not as good as few years ago.

I saw some dead whitefish floating around last weekend when I was out. The water temp. was at 77F, so no surprise that there maybe some dead whitefish. Pigeon & Calling Lake have seen the same thing + a fair bit of algae to where the water looks like pea soup. It's that time of the year where a few lakes in Alberta have that algae build it but in about 3 weeks, things should start to clear up. 👍
by Curt j on Aug. 12, 2012
Good fishing this morning. 3 jack, 10 walleye. However several dead whitefish near shore line.
by JohnnyD on Aug. 11, 2012
Got skunked. Water was gross, so much algae that it looked like pea soup. Also saw a few dozen dead whitefish floating by and in the weeds.
by Bobby on Aug. 7, 2012
Went out on August 6, 2012 for the day. Caught some Walleye & some pike in the morning. Things slowed right down mid-afternoon until we found one spot that was 3 degrees cooler than the rest of lake. We anchored & it was non-stop pike & walleye.

5 jack,2 walleye 4.5 hrs. West end of lake
by Curt j on Jul. 15, 2012
Sure Im Usually just using a kayak, but we have no problems using the south boat launch for my buddies boat , & neither do dozens of other people using this launch daily with much larger boats.
by Foleyboy on Jul. 15, 2012
Only if we knew somebody with an excavator to dig a nice launch
This is an excellent lake for fishing if only you can get your boat in.
by Curt j on Jul. 14, 2012
5 walleye @ 20" & 1 jack early this morning.
by Curt j on Jul. 7, 2012
Great morning of fishing. 12 walleye in less than 4 hrs. Gotta love kayak fishing, this lake has yet to disappoint.
by Walleye101 on Jun. 27, 2012
You are best to pay him $10 and leave your boat at Elks beach doc if you are camping there! Its quiet and safe.
by Foley boy on Jun. 21, 2012
Can you launch a large boat or do you have to pay the local farmer to launch your boat for you ?
by Cajed1 on Jun. 21, 2012
Caught plenty of walleye on shallow diving crankbaits. View on Map
by Cajed2 on Jun. 18, 2012
My apologies than. I thought south launch was pretty good & with the lack of feedback on such a quality lake close to the city I was drawing conclusions
by Walleye101 on Jun. 18, 2012
Im not a local. I seriously had a tough time launching my 18' Lund!
Good catch & release walleye & jack fishing, ignore the locals comments on poor boat launches, they just want to keep others off the lake
by Walleye101 on May. 27, 2012
Poor boat launches all around the lake if you have a big boat. Goto Killdeer Resort and pay them $10 to launch you!

by VanAbel on May. 30, 2011
Pike were hitting like crazy. Biting in the shallows around 6-8 feet deep. Casting from the pier at Killdeer resort seemed to be the hot spot. Saw a couple good pickrel caught there too right beside us
