Cruised all around Muir Lake yesterday evening. Two of us tried various spinners and spoons of all shapes, sizes and colours. Not one bite, and weeds are beginning to take over. However, the fish are still jumping everywhere.

Star Star Star Star Star

by BINO on Jul. 7, 2017

No bites at all. Weeds everywhere. Saw two pelicans nab one each though. That pretty much was the highlight.

Fished today caught one on the first cast and he broke my line, saw him in the water was huge! No other bites, maybe it was to warm during the day.

I fished it last weekend and caught a few 14" rainbows. Even after the winter kill last spring I caught a few 20"

Star Star Star Star Star

by Newfie69 on May. 20, 2017

Iceandfire, the lake fished well last season with a 0 catch limit. It has recently been stocked again this year. This is a sportsmans lake. Gotta work a bit but the fishing is decent here. They stocked rainbows and browns in it this year.

Star Star Star Star Star

by Iceandfire on May. 19, 2017

Came up to a sign saying that this lake has winter kill and there is no big ones whatsoever the limit is only one at 20 inches. Gone 3 times so far no fish, lots an lots of minnows by the dock. Lots of little fish jumping, but no bits. But overall it's nice to get out an toss the line in the water because you never know. But won't go back this year even tho it's nice an close to town.

by Hardcor on May. 7, 2017

Yeah I went Thursday. 5 or 6 other boats on there as well. No fish for anyone. Disappointed outcome.... but a nice day.

Star Star Star Star Star

by sedubius on May. 5, 2017

@Hardcor did you end up going yesterday? How was it? I am going tonight.

Star Star Star Star Star

by Hardcor on May. 3, 2017

Yes I seen that post from Nov as well. I read it the same as big fish! My bad! Anyway I'm headed there tomorrow, chucking bugs and see what happens. I wish you all the best in your up and coming open water season! : )

Star Star Star Star Star

by BigFish838383 on May. 3, 2017

Yes they talked about fishing on november 1 but notice how they said they were fishing the other day which means sometime late october.

Star Star Star Star Star

by Sastrand on May. 3, 2017

People spoke about fishing in november Hardcor....

Star Star Star Star Star

by Hardcor on May. 3, 2017

Thanks Tips! : /

Star Star Star Star Star

by NorthernYaker on May. 3, 2017

That's because the lake is closed Nov- May. By May you can't fish on what ice is remaining.

Star Star Star Star Star

by Hardcor on May. 3, 2017

I looked back at this thread that started in 2011. There is no mention of ice fishing......just people wondering if the ice is off yet is all. Thanks for the updates!

Star Star Star Star Star

by sastrand1993@gmail.com on May. 2, 2017

FYI muir lake is closed Nov1st-April 30th. Why are people talking about ice fishing?

Star Star Star Star Star

by Shawn420 on May. 1, 2017

Muir update lake is open by the dock quite a bit and south side of lake is completely open been here for a few hours nothing yet airtaiter is still going pulled as much of the fencing aside

Star Star Star Star Star

by sedubius on May. 1, 2017

Muir opens today, anyone heading out that can give an ice report? Going Friday.

Star Star Star Star Star

by Madmak on Apr. 29, 2017

Some open water but not much. Open around the aeration and about 5m from shore. Hopefully this week will get the ice off.

Star Star Star Star Star

by sedubius on Apr. 27, 2017

With the winter kill I figured it didn't need more pressure. On my hit list come ice off after may 1 though.

Star Star Star Star Star

by Mr Flyguy on Apr. 27, 2017

We must have crossed paths at Spring. The last day I fished there was November 13 and found some slabs on a Vampire leach pattern, Like you, never fished Muir at all last year.

Star Star Star Star Star

by sedubius on Apr. 25, 2017

Not Muir, Spring. I didnt fish Muir at all last year.

Star Star Star Star Star

by Mr Flyguy on Apr. 23, 2017

Well hopefully you were not on Muir in late November 'cause it's closed from November 1 to April 30!

Star Star Star Star Star

by sedubius on Apr. 18, 2017

That's wishful thinking, however I am wishing too... Gonna be a late start. Oh well I was still out on the lake late Nov. last year.

Star Star Star Star Star

by Mr Flyguy on Apr. 15, 2017

Only 2 weeks to opening day (May 1). Let's hope the ice is gone.

Star Star Star Star Star

by Goggin on Apr. 9, 2017

Still plenty of ice as of apr 9th nice to see aeration system going

by Alberta_flyfisher on Apr. 7, 2017

Has anyone been out recently? Is the ice off? Any reports of dead fish?

Star Star Star Star Star

by SnapBack02 on Nov. 1, 2016

Fished for a few hours the other day, landed 4 on back swimmers about 10ft off the dock. Biggest was 20.5 inches! Good to see!

Star Star Star Star Star

by Mr Flyguy on Aug. 13, 2016

Some of us will likely go out in the fall for the backswimmer action but if others want to wait for next spring that's OK with me!

Star Star Star Star Star

by Alberta_flyfisher on Aug. 11, 2016

Weeds have fully taken over the lake, in a float tube it's unfishable. Don't bother even trying. Go to another lake. You won't have a good time. The weeds are getting close to the dock as well.

Star Star Star Star Star

by Craig W. on Aug. 9, 2016

Was out yesterday evening (Aug. 8). Weeds have grown almost to the surface (nearly everywhere). Not a sign of trout jumping/surfacing anywhere at all. Water's probably too warm at this stage in mid-summer. Don't waste your time until next spring folks.

Alberta flyfisher.........i caught a couple last June

by Alberta_flyfisher on Jul. 22, 2016

Star Star Star Star Star

Star Star Star Star Star

by That_guy on Jun. 1, 2016

First time here really nice lake. Didn't catch anything (dock was busy and could only find shallow water by shore) would love to come back with a canoe.

Star Star Star Star Star

by iwilliamm on Jun. 1, 2016

The fishing has been fun so far although mostly smaller ones , it's too bad about the whole arreation problem ... Hope to see some good size ones in the next year or two :)

Star Star Star Star Star

by SnapBack02 on May. 26, 2016

Fishing has been good this week surprised on the size range of these fish. Biggest was 16" smallest was 10". Still trying to find the Browns tho. Anyone have any luck with them?

Star Star Star Star Star

by Barrybull on May. 26, 2016

Was out Wed 25th.........the fishing was good....28 fish all catch and release from belly boat.....was there a week ago and it seems they got a little bigger.....all caught again on the Gumphus........Hey Newfie69....care to go out sometime together

Star Star Star Star Star

by Newfie69 on May. 18, 2016

The lake is fishing well right now. Unlikely to get a nice keeper but it's good fishing just the same.

Star Star Star Star Star

Only got one this past weekend and the water temp was quite cold on the old legs out on the float tube but it was fun regardless! Fish is back swimming and my toes are back to normal haha

Star Star Star Star Star

Good fishing now on backswimmer/boatman patterns. Recent three trips have yielded a number of fish over 20 inches.

Last night, lots of fish surfacing, but not much biting. A dozen craft on the water, only saw two fish reeled in. Did see a trout the size of my arm take a GIANT leap though. That made the night worth it.

Star Star Star Star Star

by bakercreek56 on Aug. 15, 2014

Would love any tips for what they are taking in the evenings. Early season I was catching loads but now can't seem to match the fly. Tried chroni, Caddis emerged, San Juan worm, mayfly emerged, boatman and back swimmers. Nada. Help a brother out!

Star Star Star Star Star

by Cajed1 on Aug. 14, 2014

Spin casting has paid of for mr here this yr. nothing smaller than 14" so far plenty of 17-19" and a couple over 21". Not a lot each outing about 1 a hour. I find it's all about time of day. And I'm usually leaving as people show up.

by Dan83 on Aug. 14, 2014

I would say this lake is tailor made for the fly fisherman. Lots of trout jumping around today, however this lake is filled with thick grass weed. Not so good for spin casting.

Star Star Star Star Star

by Marko_o8 on Aug. 13, 2014

Two hours on spinners no bite. Few rainbows jumping around, better for fly.

Star Star Star Star Star

by bakercreek56 on Aug. 2, 2014

I can't speak for spin fisherman but for Fly fishing this is a great lake. It offers a challenge every time and offers big trout. Fished it three times this year and caught fish every time and some real beauties!

Star Star Star Star Star

Grumpy why are you even eating them??

Star Star Star Star Star

by Grumpy Gus on May. 13, 2014

Was out there opening day with no luck- wind was horrible. Some others caught a few on the fly- said they looked healthy. And for those curious- they taste just like the black mud they live in.

Star Star Star Star Star

by Dipperdan on May. 11, 2014

Fishing can tough off shore but not a lost cause. Try indicator with a balanced leach or chironomid . Have fun . please no bait and only over 20 inchs

Star Star Star Star Star

I went to the lake this morning. Open water near the dock and boat launch areas. Still a bit of ice mid lake and on the West side (looks pretty thin).. It's already fishable from shore. After today's heat wave May 1st looks like we'll be good to go! Can't wait.

Out almost everyday the last 2 weeks, hammered between 8-12 everyday mainly 18" in size, good fishin muir!

Star Star Star Star Star

by Jeffjohnstone on Aug. 22, 2013

I agree with all the work they put into muir and what it used to be like. It would be nice if people released fish. That way they are allowed to get big and fishing would be more exciting. I don't mind if people keep some. Per month but watch a guy at east pit who I am sure goes everyday and keeps all he catches

I agree it would be nice if it was only catch and release. Same with all the stocked ponds in the Edmonton area. Nice place to fish, but if people would leave them in there people would catch more fish...hence the term fishing.

Hooked two and had a couple more strikes in two hours, fishing from shore. They were just little guys, freshly stocked, but a monster jumped around 10 metres from shore.

Muir was great today. 3 fish all over 20". Perfect day, not to busy, hungry fish.

I used to drive out to Muir many years ago (20+) from Edmonton to enjoy the lake and the fishing. Back then, some idiot dumped some Jackfish in the lake and they nearly ate all the trout. He thought it made for more entertaining fishing!! Moron. Glad to hear people are still fishing there and catching trout. Do people still swim there?

Love this lake. Best with boat and flyrod. Smart, big rainbows (3lb-20" & 6lb-26"), lots of weeds.

This is a quality enhanced fishery with regulations of no bait (flies or lures only), one trout over 50cm per day (all others must be released and the lake is closed from November 1 - April 30. Muir is aerated during the winter helping the trout survive and grow to a good size. Trout of up to 24 inches have been caught here.

Can get muddy and weedy. Best shore fishing is probably from the dock casting north west.

Fished all morning no hits until 10am and then had a fish strong enough to break my new 6.5lb tippet off. Frustrating or what?

Great small lake. Air rated in winter huge rainbows and also stocked every year. There is a bait ban and a limit of one fish. The only down side is that there are alot of weeds.

Fished all afternoon from shore. Didn't get a single bite. Would be a nice place to relax if the wind didn't keep blowing me off my chair though.

fished for 4 hours in the belly boat, the only thing i got was almost frost bite and one actual bite. people were saying it might of winter killed, but i didnt see any dead fish. too early for fly fishing is my guess. we will just have to wait and see.
