19" inches of ice off to the southwest where you enter onto the ice. Ice is rotting from the underside. 24" inches off to the southeast past the resort in in about 8-9 ft of water. Watch for the pressure ridge off the point there where as water is coming onto the ice.

by PerchSlayer13 on Dec. 21, 2015
I don't fish at sturgeon in winter because I can't catch a walleye there through the ice so your doing better than me
Thanks for the advice Bucksman. Either you are good at making them mad or im not good at it hah. I use all my walleye tackle like jigs and rattle baits that I catch walleye at sturgeon on but can't buy a walleye at snipe. I don't think I'm in the right areas. Hard to find structure on this lake like drop offs or underwater humps that walleye usually hold on because the bottom structure is so gradual. Or because I haven't explored the whole lake enough. Either way I see and hear guys like yourself hauling in 5-8 pounders and it makes me so jealous. Hah
by simplebeefarmer on Dec. 21, 2015
Like 2ft ish of ice on the 20th
Fished regular walleye spots Stan, have yet to catch a walleye on a tip up, aggressive jigging seems to be the key. I don't know if we are making them mad or what...
Lots of vehicles
by Bird hunter on Dec. 21, 2015

by stanthefisherman on Dec. 20, 2015
Northwest shore is fishing great for big pike right now. Used tip up rigs and 8 inch herring. Not trying to intrude on people's fishing spots but I can't buy a walleye on this lake. I guess I haven't fished it enough.
Caught big pike all over this lake but can't catch any walleye at all. Anyone willing to tell me where to get them and help a fellow fisherman out? Haha
by Bucksman on Dec. 20, 2015
7lb7oz walleye today and a couple smaller walleye, nothing else, waiting for that giant pike

by Dale1 on Dec. 3, 2015
Anybody been in the lake yet is there enough ice to fish
by kedzman on Nov. 30, 2015
Let me know if you're able to get any. Went out yesterday to the east side, fished all over the shallows and went from 3ft to 12 ft and spotting fish on the sonar but they wouldn't bite what they normally do.. Caught 1 white and lost it at the hole. Locals weren't catching anything either.
P.s if you're coming on the road from hwy 747 on the north side be aware someone put a gate up on the road. Trucks can still go through the ditch but small cars risk bottoming out. Take south road of the lake up to the east side.

About a foot of snow on the lake. South side numerous trucks were out, east side has a little bit more snow and no trucks driving out, just sleds. Fishing was slow all morning, picked up in the evening. Marking fish on sonar all morning but not committing to biting
I was out at Sturgeon today and there was alot of snow and less ice than before New Years. Last time at Snipe there was virtually no snow on the east side and about 13" of ice. Has anyone been out there lately? Don't want to take the sled unless I have to...hoping to drive on with truck. Thanks for any info.

Went out yesterday. About 300-400 yards right of the boat launch out 100 yards from shore. 6 of us fished from 9-4. Caught 8 pike 1-14lbs, 2-6lbs, 1-5lbs and the other 4-3lbs or less. Lost several more on tip ups using herring on a red devil. Only one lone perch caught just over 1lb. No whites or walleye.

There are 3 boat launches... two on the south. One is just a public launch. The other is in southshore resort which has been closed last year and this year. The third is in the north campground.
by east2west on May. 23, 2014

by Northern alberta angler on May. 11, 2014
Called south shore resort, its going to be closed for the 2014 year. Going to have to use the north side launch or the md launch on the south side, only problem is there isnt any dock.

Went out with my son and my dad and a good friend of mine last Saturday and couldn't beleive what I witnessed on the ice and at the south end boat launch ! People have been leaving garbage behind as well as a couple of grizzly bear sized turds on the ice and at the boat launch ! Kinda grose if you ask me ! Go to shore or into the bush for the sake of others ! We need to protect and maintain our lakes as Alberta has so few of them worth visiting !
by iFish Guest on Jan. 28, 2014
Fished south end of lake all day Saturday .... Caught nothing..! Guess they didn't want my bait!
Was out there all day on Wednesday and caught a couple of really nice perch and a couple small ones too also got one small walleye well under legal some really small pike actually the smallest one I've ever caught in my life lol and one whitefish .
by Kokaneeranger on Jan. 27, 2014
Headed out bright and early Saturday morning,it was a little windy but nice nonetheless . We caught 4 perch of which only 1was big enough to keep. We try all types of jigs/lures/bait combinations but they just weren't bitin. Set a dead stick with a smelt a little further out and later in the afternoon something big hammered it. Had trouble with the rod and reel and ended up loosing it -rookie mistake lol. The fishing was slow but it was a rare and wonderful January day on the ice.

by Nanook17 on Jun. 22, 2013
I have never seen this much algae on Snipe this early in the year ! We've had no real hot days and yet it is worse than Sturgoen Lake in August ! I was very disappointed ! Even so it was a good day with my bro and our kids !
by Fishin bish on Jun. 22, 2013

by iFish Guest on Jun. 2, 2013

by Kokaneeranger on May. 28, 2013
Commercial fishing!!!!!? That's ridiculous . Another lake to be decimated. Stupidity at its finest.
by Nanook17 on May. 14, 2013
What is the point of size limits and catch limits as management tools when commercial nets catch numerous species and unpredictable numbers ! Poor management I'd say !
by Quade on May. 13, 2013
Hey big jay how's the ice coming? Is it going to be off for the weekend?
by Bigjay on May. 13, 2013
Might be a little tough to camp out at Snipe this year. According to Southshore resorts website they are closed for the 2013 season!!!
by CarebearM on May. 10, 2013
I think that allowing this lake to be commercially fished is disgusting!! What a shame on our fisheries!! The population has very much declined in that passed few years and now to do this!!! I'm lost for words!! Disgusted!!!
by iFish Guest on May. 10, 2013
So anyone think a guy will be able to get a boat on next weekend?? I'm thinking no...
by iFish Guest on May. 9, 2013
It sounds like Snipe is going to be opened up to 3 days of commercial fishing what a bunch of BS just what what used to be a great fishery that has seen a huge decline in last few years needs .
by Tweedsider on May. 5, 2013

by 2lbperch on Mar. 7, 2013
I suggest fishing the southside, the northside is just as good with a little more variation in species. A small Gold wolfram Jig with a single maggot seemed to work. The perch bit soft so look for slack in the line. Try to stay in 5-8ft. Happy fishing!
by Kokaneeranger on Mar. 6, 2013

Went there last weekend and scored on some true jumbos. Check out angleratlas.com to see pics. posted yesterday, dont know where my post went, lake is very easy access and there is probably only 2 inches of snow on top of the ice, with around 2 feet of ice where we were fishing. i've noticed this over years and figured it was summer kill or lightning, not something new thats for sure
by Marble eyes on Jul. 26, 2012
I was at snipe today and reels is rite I saw more dead whites than I ever saw before in the summer!1 thousand is not exadurated!maybe all the critics should listen instead of bashing someone or at least go look before making rude comments!
by CarebearM on Jul. 25, 2012
I was there for 2 weeks in the beginnng of July. Yes there was alot of dead whitefish. Thousands is way over exaggerating! The fish and wildlife did come and do some testing. They had said that alot is propellers killing them as well as the heat! When it gets hot the algae forms and drops the oxygen level in the water and this is hard on the white fish! As anyone who goes to this lake will know that this does happen usually every summer. Its all natural!!! This lake is a great lake to fish, anyone who has fished there knows that!!!
by Bigjay on Jul. 25, 2012
There are a few dead white fish on the lake. I have been out almost every weekend and its not getting worse. If you take a look at the fish they have wounds on them from propellers. The white fish school is massive, i have trolled through it many times and the fish will jump a foot away from the boat. With all the new boating going on on snipe there just getting hit. I havnt counted more than 20 dead ones on the lake at a time. As for the slime on top of the lake, its algae. With all the warm weather we had a while back and the wind it is blowing in from the north side of the lake. Check it out next time your there, the north side is clear
by Curt j on Jul. 23, 2012
Well I don't believe in god or the thousands of dead fish either.
Neither story has much backing.
by Reels on Jul. 23, 2012

Love snipe lake. Can't wait to get back out there. Lots caught last yr only hoping to be better this yr. I'm kinda new to the lake so hot spot feed back would be great. Enjoy all. And yes release ur catch.
by danger7 on Apr. 14, 2012
i have fished snipelake for 25years and the fishing has definitely gotten better since the 90's when there were some years of next to no perch and small pike but there were some years of very little fishing pressure and the fish seemed to recover and now the pressure is back like when i was a kid and we will probably see a bit of a dip but if the new regs get everyone to release the breeders and limit the perch intake then the lake should handle it i hope cause i enjoy the lake and the fishing.
by CarebearM on Apr. 3, 2012
Swede...did you work on the North side last summer?
I agree with Bigjays comment on Feb 19,12!! I have been fishing Snipe for 7 years now and enjoy every bit of it!! If you dont throw back the breaders we are all in trouble!! And whats with leaving the fish on the ice??? I really dont think that it is too much trouble to put them back! This lake is paradise to me and I look forward to coming back there every summer and winter for the ice fish..so please lets all take our part and look after this gem!!!!!

by Brown_Fisherman on Feb. 24, 2012
Anyone know any good spots and tips for perch? Only fished the lake twice and haven't had much luck.
by Fishingbuddy on Feb. 23, 2012
I had the same thing as highridge !! Had to find the right hook!! But they were few and far between. Just about right in the weeds!! Did OK Sat and Sun. Got a few over 12" long!! Had to work hard to get the bigger ones to bite !! Good luck guys !! Oh !! And gals!!
by Great white fisher on Feb. 22, 2012
Hey fellow anglers how is the ice at snipe, headin up there this weekend and I have a 3/4 ton pickup and a trailer with a shack on it. Is the ice solid? Thanks
by Highridge on Feb. 22, 2012
They were close to the weeds and we where seeing lots but they would not bite. Until we found a hook that they would hammer . We still had to work at them, they would come in waves you would catch a few and then nothing for a while . We just stuck it out in one spot and did ok . The hook made the difference.
by Capper on Feb. 21, 2012
Good job highridge, I was out on Saturday and didnt do nearly that good. We fished hard and moved around alot. Caught two nice jack and a couple perch. Everyone we spoke too had similar luck, a couple here and there. What's the secret highridge?

by Bigjay on Feb. 19, 2012
Perch are still there!! Just not biting. Had a buddy take his camera into the weeds and he said the perch are everywhere in the weeds, just not biting. He watched some of them digging in the bottom so there spawn must be coming soon!!! He figures the warm winter could be messing with the fish as temperature changes signal spawns and fish movement. The dirty water in the lake shows that without the snow cover on the ice the lake is trying to do its spring turn which is also contributing to the bad fishing season. Don't worry fellow fishermen, snipe lake is still doing well, were just going to have to put our beers down and try a little harder!!! Every lake in our area is suffering because of all these factors! P.S i have seen quit a few fish left on the ice this year (burbot, small perch and jack) if i catch people doing this crap i'll feed that fish to ya through your exit hole!!!! And throw your large jacks back!!!! Quit keeping your 15lb plus fish!!! They are not the ones you want, they are the breeding population!! All you people do with them is take them home and show your buddies and they end up in the trash!!!! They don't stuff fish now, take pictures of your large catch with measurements and they do a recreation of them!!! I would like my young kids to be anle to enjoy snipe lake as much as i have!!!!
by Hammer on Feb. 18, 2012
Yea def is. Went out Friday only got one small jack. Tried a bunch of places on the south side. Some ass left a jack out on the ice too!!! Not cool! Went out on north side today. Fishing in about 8-10 feet of water. Saw lots of jacks, couple walleye and maybe 6 perch on the cam. Only got one jack tho.

by Ten star on Feb. 11, 2012
How thick is the ice?
by steve INKUBUS on Feb. 11, 2012
reed55; entire setup is previously descruibed jig /worm on 6-8 lb test /light tip rod. if you cant see thetake maybe try a small flyfishing strike indicator. then youre always set at the right depth too
by Reed 55 on Feb. 11, 2012
Steve do you use a pickerel rig for stationary rods or use a different hook set up? Also what bait is best for perch?
by steve (INKUBUS) on Feb. 10, 2012
honestly i know little about perch or any alberta fish. . ive been having good luck noon until about 4. as walleye feeding is triggered by light changes (eg sunrise /sunset) i would guess if i were a perch id be scarce unless it was bright out
by Reed 55 on Feb. 10, 2012
Steve what time of day should be the best to catch perch?
by steve (INKUBUS) on Feb. 9, 2012
both sides reed 55. perch are in holes in the toulie grass. I dont thinkk one spot is any better than another. used same setup as described with a buddy on tues. -we got 22 and 4 pike. bounce /jig bait at bottom and then suspend and inch or two off. i put my rod on a cooler parrellel to ice and jig line and let it drop. membrane still on eggs and further research online suggests theyre going to be spawning in a month or so.
by Ten star on Feb. 9, 2012

as apparently the "experts" arent going to help beyond 'there (sp) out there"....
heres a displaced bc flyfishing guys amateur info . with pike that big I'd be hiding in the weeds too. got 16 kept 12.
inside the toulie gras s line , 3-4 feet of water . small yellow jig with waxworm. jiigg like mad. and lay it down to watch line . takes were sideways and barely visible. 3or4 really big ones .
hope this works for you.

There on July long weekend. Fishing was great. Caught 25 to 30 including walleye. 6 keeper jack, 1 keeper walleye. Water just starting to get green. Depth from 17 ft down to 3 ft casting and jigging. Threw everything at them, found 3 or 4 good hooks only.
by nemo on Jun. 20, 2011
Spent the weekend at Snipe lake, was only able fish a few hours each day because of the weather, but the time we did spend fishing we caught lots of fish, alot of smaller ones that we had to realease, definitely lots of fish in the lake!

Was out on sunday, caught a few small perch and 6 jack 3-14lbs, deffinatly slowed, saw no whitfish but managed to get 2 walleye, 40cm and 42cm, i agree, the limit 4 walleye should be zero, saw about a dozen this year, some are very large but i don't understand the limit of 2, let the population grow. The perch are damn tasty 2!!!
by Rhyno on Feb. 22, 2011
Lake is slow because of the time of year, it will start getting better soon as it warms up and fish are mire active!!
by Sniper on Feb. 17, 2011
Lake is slow because everybody killed the fish!
by Weekend fisherman on Feb. 15, 2011
Out on feb 14 in 7-8 feet of water 3ft of ice clean surface caught 2 48cm walley on perch jigs no bait about 40 perch threw 20 back under half a pound keepers were up to 1pound 9oz ,no jacks and white fish galore 30+
by Hater on Feb. 8, 2011
This lake is pure garbage was out feb 1, seen some whitefish. Nothing was bitting! Lake seems to be free of surface snow, flood water everywhere!
by Scainiac on Jan. 26, 2011
Was on Snipe on the 25th and there was still lots of slush and snow on the lake, but if you can find a snowmobile track to walk in then it's great because it will have the slush packed down good and you won't break through it and get wet. The Pike seemed to love the pink and blue super vibrax made by Blue Fox and green worm (nitroworm) combo in approx. six to seven feet of water.
by Cedric on Jan. 22, 2011
What a long day with wet feet. Landed two pike and seen a couple perch on the under water cam but was hardly worth going through a foot of slush EVERYWHERE!!!
by Rhyno on Jan. 21, 2011
Lake has nice camping resort. Pike and perch fishing is good. This is not a good walleye lake, populations are small and reproduction is small, very hard to catch, why they don't have a zero limit on this lake for walleye is beyond me.
by Bigjay on Jan. 18, 2011
Fishing still pretty slow, white fish are active, caught 4, 2 jack as well but no perch, a good 12 inchs of ice under 2 feet of snow - Jan. 16
