Spending 9 days at Buck, came out on Friday. My neighbor and his buddies got four keepers and had a fish fry going when I pulled up. Great tasting walleye. So far I have hit quite a few walleye and surprising no pike at all. Last night a nice big eye, 5.5 lbs and a gorgeous fish. Let him go so he can grow and I'll get him another time. They seem to be more aggressive this week even in the crazy hot weather. Week is supposed to average 25* so I look forward to a nice week on the lake. Still using either a pickerel rig or a minnow jig head. Haven't rolled yet at all. Too bad you can't post pics here, was a nice fish last night.

Yes I did call in with some license plates. I've been told it's being handled. So hopefully this will help stop this from happening anymore

BiggieB- totally agreed. Justin, need to report it if you have any of the above (actually below) info. All too many are taking non legal limit fish and getting away with it. They don't seem to care that doing that wreaks havoc on the lake walleye population, which in turn wreaks havoc on people fishing by the rules. They probably didn't have lic either! On another note, the weekend was slow for us on the buck... hot mornings early enough to drive them deep I guess. Or, just no luck on our side. Did grab some Eye, but all under 47. The creek was again a ton of fun, the challenge being the eye hiding in the hard to reach places. All in all, a slow weekend of fishing is still better than a great day a work!

Justin i hope you called report a poacher, call in with any and all information you can including license plate and vehicle description, as well as physical description of the people involved... if charges are laid you will be paid by report a poacher for your services... usually 200$ a fish

LRD VR8- we are at Hauser's Cove... so a quick drive to the gov campground at the weir, north outlet. Have to stay at least 25 m from weir. That's good though as we were there very early so we didn't want to wake all the campers. Wading is not an option as the muddy bottom just wrecks the awesome sight fishing if you wade in at all. The pike were everywhere, mostly close to shore so didn't really cast as much as just setting a fly out in front of them. Still a good current so it added more excitement trying to guide the fly right off their noses. A black coloured woolly with green tinsel was the way to go, them hungry pike ate me up like mad. Lots of fun as they were fighting real good as well. If you go, walking along the bank can be a little rough, but higher up there is a trail that starts at the back of the campground. We just walked along until we saw them sitting there, threw a fly in and the fun began. The walleye were in groups of 20-30 with a few pike mixed in. Mainly in the sandy bottom areas without weeds. More of a challenge as we used jigs with minnows on casting rods. With the current and very shallow, we had to strategically place the minnow in the feeding zone. Problem with sight fishing with the jig/minnow is making sure not to try to set the hook to early as the walleye are also not aggressive in the creek either. Have to wait til they eaten the whole thing before truly setting the hook. Tons of fun and really some great size fish in there. About 800 m up, there is a gate that crosses the creek, with a small beaver dam there too. The biggest walleye were there, but again, without wading, as well as the current, it was a challenge to place in the hot zone. But the challenges are why we do it right?

Headstrong. Pike on the fly is the ultimate! My son and I had a great time with pike in the shallows on the fly this spring at Gull. Do you do the creek at Buck on the North end or South end of the lake

Star Star Star Star Star

by Headstrong on Jun. 27, 2017

Saturday last was a great day of fishing! Spent the morning on the creek. Catching pike on the fly rod is always fun. Found some real nice walleye as well, catching them on a jig. Then spent the afternoon out on the lake and it was hot, but the eyes were biting in the deeper depths. Had a two hour span of many fish. Most were the "just short" size but plenty to be had. Soft bites though, not agressive at all. As always, Buck was great fishing.

Star Star Star Star Star

by Headstrong on Jun. 20, 2017

Spent the weekend fishing at all different times. Pike heavy and biting pretty much anything, but as said below, 5 of diamonds a very producing lure. Walleye weren't bad, but no aggressive yet. Hot sun during the day seemed to really slow things down. More luck casting than any kind of drop rig.

Star Star Star Star Star

by JohnJack on Jun. 19, 2017

Caught a nice 65cm Pike while trolling in the NW end of the lake. Using the good ol 5 of diamonds.

Star Star Star Star Star

by BeerBabesBurbot on Jun. 4, 2017

Fishing is starting to pick up. Walleyes are chasing water temp it seems. Real shallow in the morning (5-6') with 10-12 being better later in the day. As usual gotta weed through a lot of just short to get to the bigger ones. Best luck on dropshot rigs and minnows. Not quite time to be busting around sub plane like a lot seem to be doing.

by Jungle fish on May. 24, 2017

Fishing was slow this weekend unlike the thieves. I agree the conservation officers seem to only be worried if you have paid or not for your site,it seems like they are concerned more about Pigeon Lake than others just saying. Maybe the police will find my generator and my friends solar panel along with the needy people who couldn't live with out them!!

If camping at the north provincial park make sure everything valuable is either locked up or put away! We were there this past weekend and had a generator and solar panel stolen during the night! Conservation Officers came by the next day and when we told them what happened they seemed to be more worried that we paid or fees and said that they were to busy to patrol this campground as they were at Pigeon! If going there chain everything up cause there's thieves that live locally and come in at night! Good luck!

There is a campground at calhoun bay. I know the boat launch is pretty much closed down but you should still be able to drive on the lake there. Use caution as the odd year there is a spring or two that can come into play on the north side of the bay towards the mouth.

Not a bad weekend on Buck, but seemed a little slower. Ran into two other ifish users on the lake, I guess my dog is a giveaway! I think it was itroutfish, not sure though, but the second time you passed me off the hausers cove point, I landed a 50cm Eye. Best fish for me this weekend. Sunday I was anchored right off the point, a buddy of mine in another boat landed a huge pike. Got it in the boat, chained it up. When lowering it into water, giant whale broke his chain! Was a monster! Weeds seems to be getting less, algae should start thinning out a bit. Sept long tends to be a great weekend if the suns out. But that won't be the last weekend! Lol How'd you guys do? (The guys I met up with) Cheers

Star Star Star Star Star

by Headstrong on Aug. 16, 2016

Itroutfish- Might have been me.. Just me and my big Yellow Lab in the boat... A 16' Princecraft. I drifted for quite a while until I found a somewhat sweet spot. Been dropping bait a lot more these days. Haven't been trolling much. The walleyes are quite the delicate nibblers last couple of weekends. Not near as agressive as earlier summer. I think this upcoming weekend will be a little more trolling as well as dabbling with smaller minnows etc. Also very little action on worms or leeches. If you're out again, see a grey Princecraft with a heavily tattooed bald guy and usually a big dog in the boat, come by! Cheers

by iTroutfish on Aug. 15, 2016

Hey headstrong, were you guys trolling or drifting? I think we were right beside you in a green Lund and you seemed to be moving really slowly. Nice 59, we didn't get quite that big.

Fish Fry; Algae isn't bad at the moment, normal particle levels for this time of year. Weeds do seem to be a lot thicker this year. We are not fishing areas that were hot last year. Mike Laplante; I don't venture down to the boat launch area as I find it gets crazy busy there. There are great fishing areas all over the lake though, but our place is on the north end so we stick to the top half of the lake. As for what to use; it varies, do you want to cast? Do you want to bait? Or jig? Casting using a crankbait or spinner will get you more pike, or seems to for us. Jigging with a jig head and leach tends to hit the walleye well. Bait and wait with leeches, worms or minnows. Nice thing about Buck is that you can change things up and until you find what works. My 7 yr old daughter caught her very first fish yesterday, I only helped a bit to bring it in... 47cm walleye. Very nice fish for a first fish! We hit quite a few all weekend, lots of pike and walleye. Three keeper walleye that went back in the drink for next weekend!

Had a great weekend at Buck. Hot and sunny, so picked my fishing times wisely. I have a place at Hausers Cove, so it's nice to fish early, have a big breakfast, fish again, go for a beer and fish the evening. Saturday saw 23 walleye, two of which were 50 cm. both went back in the lake to be caught another time. Two pike that day. Sunday was more active with 28 walleye and 6 pike. Only one keeper walleye though. But a couple others I know were fishing the more north end by the weir and they had a hell of a weekend as well. Lots in the 46-49 range, nice fish.

Last season we fished this lake almost every weekend upon freeze up. on a fluke after loosing a minnow off a jig a Wally came by and picked it off bottom. Since then we've done standard jig and jerk method to call them in then when they just stare at it, drop it just touching bottom. Not sure why but they take it most times. Hope this helps with the frustrating stare and swim story's.

Just off lake. Fishing very slow. AB Environment & Sustainable Resource Development collecting fishing info at boat launch. Asked to see data, many people had been skunked. Surface temp 78.5, way too warm. Lots of algae on lake. Apparently fishing was much better last week. Anyway, good luck to those venturing out.

Fished Buck on the 16th. Caught 3 walleye and a pike. One walleye@49cm but no keepers...

Star Star Star Star Star

by Just jig it on Apr. 18, 2014

I agree with Ashman, the only reason Buck attracts so many fisherman is due to the fact that you can keep a walleye(if you can find a keeper) open up another lake or 2 around the area and that should take the strain off this lake.

by iFish Guest on Apr. 15, 2014

Does anyone know of any decent trout streams near buck?

Star Star Star Star Star

by Riderfan on Apr. 14, 2014

The one thing ESRD is doing wrong is to close lakes for retention, all this does is put to much pressure on lakes around them. If a lake has a collapsed population then stocking is the way to bring it back, not closing the lakes

Star Star Star Star Star

by Riderfan on Apr. 14, 2014

Yes stocking is the way to go !

Star Star Star Star Star

by Rapalaroland on Apr. 12, 2014

Haha starving walleye in gull and pigeon I think not. Great walleye in both lakes

Star Star Star Star Star

by Ashman on Apr. 12, 2014

To mr. Jr. Are u kidding me? I know that sounds like a good plan but that is not what this lake needs. What it needs is for pigeon, gull and any other lake that is polluted with starving walleye to be open for at least 2 keepers to spread out the fishing. This lake is doing great. As a 20 year local I think the worst thing to do is to increase the walleye. Not sure if u know this but more walleye = less perch. Perfect examples are pigeon and gull. Keep the city people spread out.

Star Star Star Star Star

by M.Jr on Mar. 23, 2014

To be homest like ive fishesd this lake many times and i really think they should close this lake for fishing for the populations to grow or atleast have a catch and release only for a couple of years it would really help the perch and u would catch am average of a keeper walleye in this lake.

Been fishing this lake for many years. I don't agree with the gill nets! All the anglers have size restrictions but gill nets kill all species and sizes.I have heard they are going to put an end to it and so they should. For perch I fish the northwest section of the lake. A longer rod helps keep the bait out away from the boat. Much better luck that way.also I use beef heart for bait on a bobber.they seem to love it. For walleye. The east side of the lake about midway up. There is almost always someone there. Black jig with chartreuse power bait and a leach has never failed me.it goes from 2.5 feet to 25 feet and I just keep going from deep to shallow and circle back. Hope this helps!

Don't mean to be discouraging. But when these issues come up in conversation or forum having at least some of the facts and realities helps everyone shed light on a unsustainable practice( netting ) that needs to be banned from inland Alberta lakes. Lets not forget we still live in one of the best places in the world to fish but we will have to fight to keep it that way

Star Star Star Star Star

by Pikster on Apr. 26, 2012

Pretty discouraging news from all you folks. Kind of disturbing news to me and my young sons. I really hope things change with commercial fishing restrictions cause it may cause my kids to lose interest and what a shame that would be!

Star Star Star Star Star

by Me on Mar. 17, 2012

I am not a commercial fisherman and never agreed with it either. But if u do your research the people that do it legally have restrictions on depth and where on the lake they can net. In the end very few walleye actually get caught. I went out the last two years cause I live on the lake and during the pull, out of 300 whitefish caught there was maybe 2 walleye in 10-15 different nets. I go to northern sask every year fishing and the owner of the lodge encourages commercial fishing because the whitefish eat walleye eggs. He also said other lakes in the area were ruined when they stopped netting because of the whites. I think controlled netting is good for the lake but they've got to do something with the poachers

Wow we will be out of fish in our lakes at that rate and my kids won't now what it's like to have a good day of fishing. I recently listened to a very experienced elderly gentleman who has been on buck for 60 yrs - he offered a dated 10 yr journal of every fish he caught with length/ time of day and species to Fish and wildlife at the buck lake meeting and was declined !!! Told it wasn't scientific enough- unreal. Fishing sucks as usual after they net the he'll out of the lake in the beginning of jan !! Did well before and crappy after ...you do the math... Somehow fish and wildlife in their infinite wisdom this year is going to put tags for recreational walleye fisherman who can measure every fish we catch, but are continuing to allow gill netting every year on this lake.- who's getting paid off and how much power does the gill netting lobby group have with the government.... @ drew we have caught Perch this year and we used Buck Lake Shiners or worms. I have been fishing Buck for the past 20 years and this year by far has been the best! Best time of the day is early morning till noon then it shuts right down. Then again in the evening is best.

Went to give the kids a chance at catching some Perch and hopefully limit out on Walleye, got skunked on both counts........Saw alot of boats huddled together but did not want to rush in and try our luck, so we hung out about 30-50 yards away. Would like to know what type of bait to use there as to help the 3YO catch Perch and have fun like I did at his age. Am hoping to get up there again this weekend to try it out again.
