I have successfully used woolly buggers and egg pattern flies here too. Being a 'hook and cook' fisherman, I only release em if they are too small. That means I only get to take five. And, you are all correct, they are the best tasting little trout in the area. No mud taste, and scrappy little fighters, too.
Great place to learn to flyfish.

My favourite place for rainbows since they taste good. In May I use doc spratleys & others about 1 - 1 1/2" long & a small bobber or 3 flies looped off the main line & a small weight at the end later. Faster earlier & slower later in May/June until stop & wiggle. Then in the fall on my way to & from bow hunting I use various size back swimmers & vary speed from quite fast to slower later til freeze up. They stocked this lake with lots of 12" & 6" fish which you can catch on small dark chironomids.(or just a stripped old black fly about size 12) (see Icky fly works)
